Local roundup: Maples edge Mikes to give Everson first win as coach
Josh Mick’s late three-point play lifted Mapletown over host Carmichaels, 60-58, giving Chris Everson his first win as coach of the Maples in boys basketball action at the King Coal Lions Tournament on Wednesday.
The Mikes (3-5) held a 58-57 lead but the Maples broke Carmichaels’ press and got the ball to Mick who scored and was fouled with less than a minute remaining. He made the free throw to set the final score.
“We got a defensive stop to seal it,” Everson said.
The Mikes led 23-12 after the first quarter and 35-25 at halftime. Mapletown (1-5) used a 21-14 advantage in the third quarter to get within 49-46, then outscored Carmichaels 14-9 in the fourth quarter.
“We came back from a double-digit deficit, and we did it through effort and not giving up on ourselves,” Everson said. “We stuck to the things we’ve been working on and it paid off.”
Dom Colarusso hit four 3-pointers in scoring a game-high 34 points for the Mikes.
Jeremiah Mick, Josh’s twin brother, led the Maples with 18 points. Roger Gradek followed with 14 and Lucas Stevenson added 12 points.
“We got a monster game from Jeremiah,” Everson said. “He not only scored but he controlled the boards and was a defensive menace with at least five blocked shots and over 10 rebounds. Lucas provided a huge scoring spark when we needed it most in the third and fourth.
“We showed grit and determination and found a way to win.”
Jefferson-Morgan 56, Beth-Center 50 – The Rockets outscored the Bulldogs 31-23 in the second half to rally for a first-round victory at the King Coal Lions Tournament in Carmichaels.
Jefferson-Morgan (6-3) advanced to Thursday’s final against Mapletown.
Beth-Center (1-6) led 19-11 after the first quarter and 27-25 at halftime.
Brody Tharp scored 15 points for B-C, which also got 14 points from Jason Zellie and nine from Jonah Sussan.
Canon-McMillan 60, Albert Gallatin 40 – The Big Macs broke a 15-15 tie by out-scoring the Colonials 20-9 in the second quarter and went on to post a win at the Trinity Holiday Tournament.
Eamon O’Donoghue led Canon-McMillan (5-4) with 25 points and Roman Koenemund had 12.
Blake White tallied 10 points for AG (4-3).
West Greene 46, Bentworth 45 – The Pioneers outscored the host Bearcats 5-4 in overtime to earn the win at the Bentworth Christmas Tournament.
Parker Burns scored 14 points for West Greene (4-4) which also got 13 points from Lane Allison and 10 from Matt Wassil.
The loss spoiled a game-high 29-point effort by Bentworth’s Ben Hays.
The Pioneers led 19-14 at halftime but the Bearcats (1-6) pulled even at 29-29 after three quarters and the score remained deadlocked at 41-41 at the end of regulation.
Brownsville 58, Carrick 53 – The Falcons defeated the Raiders at the Bentworth Christmas Tournament to improve to 5-4 on the season.
Carrick falls to 2-5.
Charleroi 59, California 33 – Jackson Keranko tossed in a game-high 21 points as the host Cougars rolled past the Trojans at the Charleroi Holiday Tournament.
Jake Beveridge added 10 points for Charleroi (3-5).
Caden Monticelli topped California (0-7) in scoring with nine points.
Southmoreland 69, South Park 68 – Ty Keffer poured in 29 points to help the Scotties remain unbeaten with a one-point victory over the Eagles at the Charleroi Holiday Tournament.
Noah Felentzer followed with 18 points for Southmoreland (8-0) which led 20-15, 34-28 and 50-48 at the quarter breaks.
Cooper Hochondoner and Luck Scarff paced South Park (4-3) with 24 and 22 points, respectively. Danny Batista chipped in with 15 points.
East Allegheny 50, Ringgold 49 – Damar Young scored 22 points, including a 3-pointer at the buzzer, to lift the Wildcats over the Rams at the Charleroi Holiday Tournament.
Ringgold (2-6) held a 43-37 lead after three quarters but East Allegheny (3-5) used a 13-6 edge in the final frame to pull out the win.
Daryl Tolliver tied for game-high honors with 22 points for the Rams, who also got 11 points from Aidan Angotti.
Jeannette 76, Connellsville 48 – Markus McGowan and Noah Sunder each scored 15 points as the Jayhawks cruised past the Falcons at the Greensburg Salem Christmas Tournament.
Xavier Odorisio-Farrow and Kymon’e Brown added 12 and 10 points for Jeannette (7-2).
Anthony Piasecki tossed in 14 points for Connellsville (0-9).
Greensburg Salem 54, Mount Pleasant 48 – The host Lions used an 8-2 advantage in overtime to pull out a win over the Vikings at the Greensburg Salem Christmas Tournament.
Braedon Leatherman scored 16 points, Ryan Burkart followed with 12 and A.J. Tarpley contributed 10, including two game-tying free throws at the end of regulation to force the extra frame for Greensburg Salem (2-7).
Dante Giallonardo topped Mount Pleasant (2-6) in scoring with 16 points and Chase McCloy added 13.
Girls basketball
Greensburg Salem 61, Brownsville 35 – The Lady Falcons fell behind early and were unable to rally against the Lady Lions in the Mount Pleasant Holiday Tournament.
Greensburg Salem (8-1) led 11-4, 24-14 and 44-23 at the quarter breaks.
Skyler Gates led Brownsville (7-3) with 15 points. Zhariah Reed finished with 12 points.
The Lady Lions’ Ashlan Price scored a game-high 16 points. Kait Mankins added 15 points.
Mount Pleasant 30, Connellsville 27 – The host Lady Vikings built on a 12-0 advantage in the third quarter for a victory over the Lady Falcons.
Connellsville (2-6) led 20-15 at halftime, but trailed 27-20 after the third quarter.
Whitney Bobish paced Connellsville with 11 points. Riley Gesinski scored a game-high 12 points for Mount Pleasant (7-2).
South Side 63, Ringgold 28 – The South Side defense held Ringgold to single digits in each quarter for a victory in the Bentworth Holiday Tournament.
Naomi McNary led Ringgold (2-5) with 11 points. South Side improves to 4-5 overall.
Bentworth 60, Propel Montour 7 – The host Lady Bearcats rolled to an easy victory over Propel Montour.
Amber Sallee scored a career-high 28 points and had five assists for Bentworth (2-6). Gianna Brown finished with 10 points and nine rebounds. Taylor Aubrey had five steals and five rebounds.
Propel Montour goes to 2-6 overall.
Brentwood 45, Jefferson-Morgan 6 – The Lady Spartans scored all the points they needed in the first quarter for a victory in the King Coal Lions Tournament.
Mia March and Ay’Maree Henry both scored 11 points for Brenwood (2-5). The Lady Rockets slip to 2-7 overall.
Boys wrestling
Ringgold 48, John Marshall 30 – The Rams received three forfeits for a victory in the fourth match of the Wheeling Park Duals at Highlands Sports Complex.
Andrew Bruce (106), Justin Steingrabe (113), and Mia Scalise (120) all received forfeits.
Carter Adkins (132), Camden Barkey (138), Cristian Lowther (144), Jack Duncan (157), Gavin Mincin (175), and Jake Conway (215) won by fall.
Ringgold 41, St. Albans 33 – The Rams rallied to win the final four bouts to cap the holiday wrestling tournament with a victory.
Gavin Mincin started the late run at 175 pounds with a pin. Owen Conway followed with a fall at 190 pounds. Jake Conroy (215) and James Holmes (285) received forfeits to close out the match.
Justin Steingrabe won a technical fall at 113 pounds. Evan Tolliver (120) and Jack Duncan (157) won with pins.
