Local baseball roundup: Rockets edge Trojans 1-0 in 9 innings

Brenton Barnhart singled and scored on an error in the top of the ninth inning to give Jefferson-Morgan a tense 1-0 win at California in Section 1-A baseball action on Friday.

Brock Bayles stranded two Trojans runners in the bottom of the ninth with a game-ending strikeout to earn the win.

Deakyn DeHoet tripled and singled and Barnhart had two hits for the Rockets (1-6, 3-6) who also got a pair of singles from Brayden Ellsworth.

Chase Cicchitto doubled for California (2-5, 2-6) which was limited to just four hits.

Starting pitchers John Woodward for J-M and the Trojans’ Caden Monticelli both turned in stellar performances.

Woodward allowed two hits and two walks with 13 strikeouts in six innings. Monticelli gave up six hits and one walk with 10 strikeouts in seven innings.

Bayles surrendered two hits and one walk with three strikeouts in tossing the final three innings.

Losing pitcher Logan Hartley coughed up just the one unearned run on two hits with no walks and four strikeouts in two innings.

Belle Vernon 5, Ringgold 2 – Cole Matusik’s two-run single brought in the tying and go-ahead runs as the Leopards rallied in the seventh inning to pull out a Section 2-AAAA victory at Ringgold.

Belle Vernon (5-1, 8-2) trailed 2-1 when it struck for four runs in the top of the seventh to make a winner of Lucas Judy who tossed a complete game.

Colton Lee had two hits and Judy and Jake Gedekoh both had an RBI for the Leopards who also got a double from Adam LaCarte.

Spencer Behrendt and Amani Ward each drove in a run for the Rams ((1-5, 3-7). Losing pitcher Eddie Frizzell went 6 1/3 innings.

Bentworth 5, Frazier 2 – Lucas Burt stroked three hits, including a triple, and Ben Hays had two hits and three RBIs as the Bearcats beat the host Commodores in a Section 1-AA game.

Winning pitcher Sam Wade threw a three-hitter with three walks, two strikeouts and one earned run for Bentworth (2-6, 2-7).

Losing pitcher Logan Brown also went the distance, allowing four earned runs on eight hits with no walks and four strikeouts.

Brock Alekson and Dailan McManus both doubled and Aidan Hardy had an RBI for Frazier (2-4, 4-7).

Waynesburg Central 12, Greensburg Salem 9 – Alex VanSickle doubled, singled and scored three runs in the Raiders’ Section 4-AAA win over the visiting Lions.

Waynesburg scored six runs in the first inning and one in the second to take a 7-0 lead and push the gap up to 11-2 after four innings before withstanding a late Greensburg Salem push.

Ethan Kiger had three hits and two RBIs, Grant Pack knocked in three runs and Trenton Zupper smacked a triple for the unbeaten Raiders (6-0, 7-0). Winning pitcher Tyler Groves gave up two runs on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts in four innings.

Braedon Leatherman doubled for the Lions (4-4, 4-5). Brody Chismar took the loss.

Fort Cherry 9, Carmichaels 5 – Ryan Huey was 4 for 4 with a home run, double and five RBIs as the visiting Rangers topped the Mikes for the second day in a row in Section 1-A.

Matt Sieg knocked in two runs with a home run and two singles for Fort Cherry (5-1, 7-1). Winning pitcher Blake Sweder gave up two runs on three hits in five innings and also doubled, singled and knocked in a run.

Ambrose Adamson smashed a home run and a double and knocked in two runs for Carmichaels (4-2, 6-2) which also got three hits and an RBI from Aydan Adamson.

Losing pitcher Liam Lohr gave up five runs (two earned) on eight hits with no walks and one strikeout in 1 2/3 innings.

Avella 19, Mapletown 3 – Cam Ullom had five RBIs and the Eagles exploded for 13 runs in the first inning in rolling to a four-inning Section 1-A win at Mapletown.

Isaiah Bradick had three hits for Avella (6-1, 7-1) and starting pitcher Bryce Wright doubled.

Cole Jaworoski earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief.

Joshua Mick had two hits for the Maples (0-5, 2-7). Spencer Yeager took the loss.
