Local softball/track roundup: Davis stars as Lady Falcons earn share of section title
Kirra Davis smacked three hits, including a two-run homer and a double, to propel visiting Connellsville past Peters Township, 5-2, and give the Lady Falcons a share of the Section 4-AAAAA softball title on Monday.
Cali Leichliter doubled, and Jaylee Moorhead and winning pitcher Iris Burd both had two hits for the Lady Falcons (7-3, 11-5).
Leichliter had an RBI in a three-run fourth inning that broke a scoreless tie.
The Lady Indians (1-8, 4-11) countered with two runs in the bottom of the inning but Davis pushed the gap back up to three with her home run in the sixth.
Burd allowed four hits and four walks with five strikeouts.
Madison Renda singled twice for Peters Township.
Frazier 5, Jeannette 4 – Emi Bednar hit a tiebreaking RBI single in the top of the eighth inning to lift the Lady Commodores past the host Lady Jayhawks in a clash of the top teams in Section 3-A.
Bednar was 4 for 4 with a double and two RBIs, Grace Vaughn doubled and singled and Jayanna Ciferno also doubled for Frazier (9-0, 9-0) which took over sole possession of first place.
Winning pitcher Addison Hiles gave up one earned run on eight hits with five walks and 14 strikeouts.
Losing pitcher Grace Stein allowed two earned runs on 10 hits with no walks and 12 strikeouts and singled twice. Abigail Shaw had three hits, including a pair of doubles for Jeannette (9-1, 10-1).
Elizabeth Forward 13, Uniontown 0 – Addy Nigut hit a grand slam, Berlyn Holibaugh also homered and Shelby Telegdy threw a no-hitter as the Lady Warriors remained perfect in Section 2-AAAA with a five-inning win at second-place Uniontown.
Telegdy, Nigut and Alyssa Dulla each had two hits for Elizabeth Forward (10-0, 13-1) which also got doubles from Hannah Evans and Julia Resnik.
Telegdy struck out eight and walked two.
The Lady Raiders fall to 8-2 in the section and 8-3 overall.
Belle Vernon 10, Albert Gallatin 3 – The Lady Leopards scored four runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to rally for a Section 2-AAAA win over the host Lady Colonials.
Gracie Sokol had three hits, two doubles, and Bella Williams had three RBIs for Belle Vernon (7-4, 12-4) which also got a double and two RBIs from Sydney Stark.
Mya Glisan doubled and had two RBIs for Albert Gallatin.
Carmichaels 2, West Grene 0 — Bailey Barnyak fired a two-hit shutout and Sydney Miller hit an RBI double as the Lady Mikes edged the host Lady Pioneers in a Section 2-A game.
Barnyak, who struck out six, had a perfect game for 5⅓ innings for Carmichaels (7-1, 10-2) before allowing a single to Ella Scott.
Payton Gilbert pitched well in defeat for West Greene (6-4, 7-6), surrendering just one earned run on five hits in 5 2/3 innings, and had the only other hit off Barnyak.
Seton LaSalle 2, Waynesburg Central 1 — Kiara Cerminara hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning and Gianna Ferrieri pitched a two-hitter as the Lady Rebels edged the visiting Lady Raiders in a Section 4-AAA game.
There were only four hits in the game with Cerminara’s the most important. Waynesburg pitcher Gina Tedrow matched Ferrieri by throwing a two-hitter. She struck out 11.
Dani Stockdale had a double for Waynesburg (4-6, 6-10).
Bentworth 15, Beth-Center 0 — Sydney Gonglik fired another no-hitter and had a big day at the plate as the host Lady Bearcats defeated the Lady Bulldogs in a four-inning in Section 3-AA game.
Gonglik struck out 11, walked none and went 4-for-4 with a home run, two triples, four runs and three RBIs from the leadoff spot.
Sofia Gaussa smacked two doubles and scored three times, Nora Lindley added a double and three RBIs and Kyleigh Glaze had a double as Bentworth improved to 10-0 in section and 12-2 overall.
South Park 3, Brownsville 1 – The first-place Lady Eagles fended off the host Lady Falcons in a Section 4-AAA game.
The loss keeps Brownsville (2-6, 3-8) a game in back of fourth-place Seton LaSalle in the battle for a playoff berth.
Alexa Pellick had two hits and Skyler Gates contributed a double and an RBI for the Lady Falcons.
Losing pitcher Ava Clark gave up three runs on eight hits with no walks and eight strikeouts.
South Park improves to 9-0 in the section and 13-1 overall.
Yough 14, South Allegheny 6 – Makayla Spoonhoward had five hits, including a pair of home runs, as the visiting Lady Cougars triumphed over the Lady Gladiators in a Section 3-AAA game.
Winning pitcher Adoria Waldier added four hits, including a home run, and Kaylin Ritenour also homered for Yough (5-3, 6-3) which also got three hits from Keirstein Odelli and two hits from Maddie Horvat.
OLSH 4, Charleroi 3 — Julia Pinter hit a walk-off two-run homer with no outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, giving Our Lady of the Sacred Heart a Section 3-AA win over visiting Charleroi.
Pinter finished the day 2-for-3 with three RBIs for the Lady Chargers (7-1, 9-3).
Ariahna Blouse was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs for the Lady Cougars (6-4, 9-4). Kaylee Sypolt, Madalynn Lancy and losing pitcher Sofia Celaschi each doubled for Charleroi. Celashi struck out 10.
Chartiers-Houston 18, Mapletown 0 — Ella Richey went 4-for-4 with a home run and six RBIs, powering the Section 2-A leading Lady Bucs to an 18-0 win over the host Lady Maples in four innings.
Lauren Rush also hit a home run for C-H (9-0, 11-1). She went 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Richey and Rush also had a double, as did Zaylee Fonner. The Bucs scored nine runs in the first inning.
Avella 11, California 10 – The host Lady Eagles scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for an 11-10 come-from-behind victory over the Lady Trojans in Section 2-A.
Avella trailed 10-1 in the third inning but battled back and took the lead in the sixth when a single by Emma Johnson drove in Haleigh Rush.
Rush had a triple and winning pitcher Avery Rado doubled for Avella.
Ligonier Valley 2, Mount Pleasant 0 – Cheyenne Piper tossed a six-hitter and had two hits as the Lady Rams blanked the host Lady Vikings in a Section 3-AAA game.
Natlie Bizup hit a double for Ligonier Valley (8-2, 11-2).
Dani Trainer had two hits, including a double, for Mount Pleasant (5-5, 10-7).
Greensburg Salem 12, Ringgold 0 – Addison Jenkins had the lone hit for the Lady Rams (2-8, 2-10) in a Section 2-AAAA loss to the visiting Lady Lions (3-7, 5-10).
Girls track & field
Scott Frederick Mid Mon Track Classic – Although unseasonably warm temperatures cut the annual meet at Ringgold short, several local girls secured top finishes.
Belle Vernon’s Sienna Steeber (pole vault, 11-0) and Lily Shahan (javelin, 106-7) won gold medals. The Lady Leopards’ Caroline Lee (long jump, 14-8½), Eternal Johnson (triple jump, 29-1), and Alexis Baker (discus, 84-5) all placed second.
Bentworth’s Jesse Laskey finished second in the 1,600 in 6:06.76.
Beth-Center’s Mackenza Spangler won the discus with a throw of 94-4.
Brownsville’s A’zyia Dade took gold in the 100 with a time of 13.16 seconds and helped the 400 relay finish first in 51.47 seconds. The Lady Falcons’ Zhariah Reed (100 high hurdles, 16.67) finished second.
California’s Ella Neil won gold medals in the high jump (5-1) and triple jump (31-7½), as did Hayley Gibson in the shot put (31-8½). Gianna Smith finished second in the 400 (1:05.20).
Charleroi’s Ella Sypolt (400, 1:03.36) and Eden Smith (100 high hurdles, 16.11) won gold medals.
Elizabeth Forward’s Lily Ash (1,600, 6:06.76), 3,200 relay (11:11.38), Leilana Speney (pole vault, 6-6), Meadow Whatton (javelin, 102-4), and McKenna Bittner (shot put, 30-1) all won silver medals.
Ringgold had gold medal performances by Lily Brenneman (1,600, 5:43.73) and the 3,200 relay (11:07.14). The Lady Rams’ Imani Arnold (100, 13.22) and 400 relay (52.34) won silver medals. Abigael Nicolas won the high jump (5-1) and long jump (15-4½).
Boys track & field
Scott Frederick Mid Mon Track Classic – Several local athletes survived the unusually warm temperature for gold and silver performances in the annual classic hosted by Ringgold.
Belle Vernon’s Ryan Kent won gold (discus, 130-9) and silver (javelin, 148-2) in the throws. The Leopards’ Logan Metzger (400, 53.38), Ryan White (110 high hurdles, 16.76), Chase Mertz (triple jump, 37-8½), and Dane Levi (shot put, 43-3) finished second.
Beth-Center’s 3,200 relay won the silver medal with a time of 9:16.84.
Brownsville’s 400 relay placed second in 45.02 seconds.
California’s Noah Neil won gold in the triple jump with a top effort of 38-6. The Trojans’ Lee Qualk placed second in the 100 (11.61) and long jump (19-9). Lucas Bloom finished second in the pole vault (9-0).
Charleroi’s Braedin Lunger had a double gold medal performance with first-place finishes in the 110 high hurdles (15.89) and long jump (21-2½).
Connor Stokes (100, 11.06), Charlie Meehleib (javelin, 151-1), Chris Climes (shot put, 48-9½), Dominic Cavalier (400, 52.98), Patrick Burgos (1,600, 4:29.79), and the 3,200 relay all won gold medals for Elizabeth Forward. The Warriors’ Hunter Thomas finished second in the 1,600 in 4:47.73.
Ringgold’s 400 relay (44.86) and Dawson Mancini (pole vault, 9-0) won gold medals.
