Local roundup: Lady Colonials win close battle at Connellsville, 41-38

Ellie Seese scored two key baskets in the fourth quarter to put Albert Gallatin ahead and the Lady Colonials hung on for a hard-fought 41-38 non-section girls basketball victory in their season opener at Connellsville on Tuesday night.

Mya Glisan scored a game-high 15 points for AG (1-0) and Grayce Panos followed with 10 points.

Elizabeth Painter led the Lady Falcons (0-2) with 14 points, including a three-point play that gave her team a 33-30 lead in the fourth quarter.

Panos tied it at 33-33 with a 3-pointer and Seese broke the deadlock with consecutive buckets to put Albert Gallatin ahead to stay, 37-33.

Connellsville whittled the gap to three but missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer in the closing seconds.

West Greene 50, Waynesburg 35 – Kendra Tharp scored 16 points as the Lady Pioneers improved to 3-0 with a non-section victory over the host Lady Raiders.

West Greene took a 17-7 lead in the first quarter and extended its advantage to 33-20 by halftime. Waynesburg Central used a 10-5 edge in the third quarter to get within 38-30 but the Lady Pioneers pulled away in the final frame.

Marissa Tharp and Madelyn Roberts each tallied 11 points for West Greene.

Avery Davis racked up a game-high 21 points for Waynesburg (0-1).

Trinity 47, Belle Vernon 21 – Sutton Williamson scored 10 points to lead a balanced attack as the Lady Hillers (1-0) knocked off the visiting Lady Leopards in a non-section game.

Aubrey Brown led all scorers with 11 points and also grabbed five rebounds for Belle Vernon (2-2).

McGuffey 58, Mount Pleasant 32 – Taylor Schumacher scored 17 points as the Lady Highlanders beat the visiting Lady Vikings (0-1) in a non-section win.

McGuffey (3-0) also got 13 points apiece from Faith Ealy and Lexi Ewig.

Boys basketball

Connellsville 57, Yough 19 – Lucas Harwood scored a game-high 20 points as the Falcons soared to a non-section win over the host Cougars (0-1) in the season opener for both teams..

Rocco Farrell followed with 11 points for Connellsville (1-0).

Chartiers Valley 83, Laurel Highlands 54 – Jayden Davis erupted for 41 points as the Colts’ rolled to a non-section victory over LH in the Mustangs’ season opener.

Julius Best had 14 points for Chartiers Valley (2-0).

Aiden Black paced the Mustangs (0-1) with 22 points and Antwan Black chipped in with 14.

West Greene 57, Waynesburg Central 33 – Lane Allison poured in a game-high 26 points as West Greene stormed back in the fourth quarter to overtake and pull away from host Waynesburg Central in a non-section game that was the season opener for both teams.

The Raiders (0-1) led 7-5, 22-21 and 33-30 at the quarter breaks before the Pioneers (1-0) exploded for 27 points in the final frame.

Darren Knight followed Allison with 12 points for West Greene.

Dane Woods led Waynesburg with 11 points.

Jefferson-Morgan 47, Avella 43 – The Rockets outscored the host Eagles 13-5 in the fourth quarter to pull out a non-section victory in their season opener..

Houston Guesman and Jeremiah Robertson scored 11 points apiece to lead the way for J-M (1-0).

Eli Maidment and Bryce Wright both tallied 10 points for Avella (1-2) which led 21-16 at halftime and 38-34 after three quarters.

Albert Gallatin 63, Carrick 54 – The Colonials improved to 2-0 under first-year coach Spencer Macke with a non-section victory visiting Carrick.

Jason Jackson led the way with a game-high 18 points for Albert Gallatin, which trailed 5-4 after a low-scoring opening quarter before surging to a 22-19 halftime lead. The Colonials pushed their advantage out to 44-35 at the end of three quarters and held on from there.

Jeremiah Darnell and Darrin Ford added 15 and 14 points, respectively, for AG.

Brayden Fisher led the Raiders (0-1) with 17 points, Kelenn Ward followed with 15 and Treshawn Beasley had 13.

Frazier 57, Carmichaels 32 – Dalian McManus rang up 32 points and the host Commodores cruised to a non-section win over the Mikes.

Frazier jumped out to a 19-7 lead in the opening quarter and never looked back. The Commodores led 33-16 at halftime and 53-22 after three quarters.

Kolby Stewart had 11 points for Frazier (1-2).

Robbie Wilson-Jones tossed in 12 points for Carmichaels (0-1).

Geibel Catholic 63, Apollo-Ridge 56 – Evan Strimel tossed in 23 points to help the Gators knock off host Apollo Ridge in a non-section game.

Gary Tarbuk followed with 12 points for Geibel (1-0) which also got eight points from Mike Miller.

Zane Beatty and Brayden Myers led Apollo-Ridge (1-2) with 15 and 13 points.

South Side 68, Beth-Center 62 – Andrew Corfield scored 32 points to help South Side defeat the visiting Bulldogs in a non-section game.

Beth-Center fell behind 27-14 in the first quarter but fought back to within 49-41 by the end of the third quarter and outscored South Side 21-19 in the fourth as its comeback fell short.

Parker Amos topped B-C (1-1) in scoring with 21 points and Jason Zellie contributed 17 points with a trio of 3-pointers. Brayden Hull added 10 points.

Raymond Fischer had 11 points for South Side.

South Park 70, California 33 – Luke Scarff scored 27 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as the Eagles rolled past the visiting Trojans in a non-section game.

Danny Battista added 14 points for South Park (1-0) and Nolan Oliphant and Cooper Hochendoner each had 11 points.

Vinnie Manzella paced California (0-1) with 12 points.

Belle Vernon 55, Gateway 54 – Tommy Davis scored with 1.5 seconds remaining to lift the Leopards to a one-point win over the host Gators in a non-section game.

Zion Moore led Belle Vernon (1-2) with a game-high 33 points that included four 3-pointers. Trevor Kovatch made two treys in scoring 12 points and Davis ended up with eight points and 13 rebounds.

The Leopards led 13-10, 28-23 and 44-35 at the quarter breaks before Gateway rallied in the fourth quarter to take the lead. That just set the state for Davis’ winning shot.

Mykel Bryce-McCromon dropped in 30 points for Gateway (0-2) which also got 10 from Pual Nnacho.

Keystone Oaks 74, Southmoreland 54 – Erond Jakupi had 26 points in the Golden Eagles’ non-section win over the host Scotties who were playing their season opener.

Joey Colton notched 12 points for Keystone Oaks (3-0).

Noah Felentzer led all scorers with 29 points for Southmoreland (0-1) which also got 10 points from Ty Whoric.

Hockey

Morgantown 2, Connellsville 1 – Jacob Hollander scored the winning goal in overtime to lift Morgantown over the Falcons.

Cooper Cox assisted on Hollander’s tally and also scored a goal for Morgantown (8-1).

Logan Jenkins had the lone goal for Connellsville (6-2-1).
