Colonial wrestlers edge Southmoreland
Roman Smith and Julius Poole won by technical fall to help carry Albert Gallatin to a 40-36 victory over Southmoreland on Wednesday night in non-section wrestling action at Albert Gallatin.
Smith earned his technical fall at 189 pounds with a 17-2 victory in 5:05 before Poole posted a 17-2 score in 5:50 at 127.
Jason Myers (215), Clayton Bollinger (133) and Kage Churby (145) all won by fall for the Colonials (1-0).
Landon Delara (172), David Sager (285), Micah McGeary (139) and Shawn Hollis (160) recorded pins for the Scotties (0-1).
Waynesburg 36, Jefferson-Morgan 34 – The Bob Stephenson-era for the Raiders began in a non-section victory over the Rockets in a Greene-County showdown at Waynesburg Central High School.
The Raiders’ Brock Evans won a 4-3 decision over Alex Palko at 160 pounds and teammate Ky-Mani Sumpter earned an 11-8 victory at 172 to increase Waynesburg’s lead to 24-16 with five weights remaining.
Jacob Stephenson’s fall in 37 seconds at 189 and Roan Tustin’s forfeit at 215 clinched the dual meet for the Raiders (1-0).
Jefferson-Morgan’s Landon Heath won by fall in 48 seconds at 285 before the Rockets’ Brayden Hanning (107) and Caleb Dulaney (114) won by forfeit.
Waynesburg’s Floyd Huff (121), Jesse Huff (127) and Luke Rush (139) won by fall.
The Rockets’ James Dulaney earned a 14-6 major decision at 133. Teammates Johnny Gilbert (145) and Dominic Sowden (152) recorded pins in the team’s opener.
Avella 54, West Greene 24 — Six falls and three forfeits led the Eagles to a non-section victory at West Greene.
Avella (1-0) was out of the WPIAL team competition, but the Eagles are back and looking to make a run for it in Class 2A Section 2.
The Pioneers’ Noah Collins (121), Levi Yeater (152) and Colin Whyte (285) recorded falls. Teammate Reece Tharp received a forfeit at 172.
The Eagles received forfeits at 114, 133 and 139.
McGuffey 54, Mount Pleasant 17 — The Highlanders had seven falls en route to a non-section triumph over the Vikings at McGuffey.
A forfeit at 127 increased the Highlands’ advantage, but Mount Pleasant (0-1) earned a victory in the second bout when Tristan Wtorkiewicz won by technical fall (17-2) in 5:00 at 145.
The Vikings’ Aidan Teaters and Payton Schaum had back-to-back falls at 215 and 285.
Girls basketball
Mapletown 37, Jefferson-Morgan 25 – Nicole Barerra recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds and also had two steals and a blocked shot as the Lady Maples defeated the host Lady Rockets in a non-section game.
Makenna Lotspeich added 12 points and four steals for Mapletown (2-2) which also got 10 rebounds from Sophia Jennings and nine points and six steals from Helena Cumpston.
The Lady Maples led 9-3, 19-16 and 25-20 at the quarter breaks before pulling away with a 12-5 advantage in the final frame.
Leighana Gooden led Jefferson-Morgan (0-3) with eight points.
Waynesburg Central 62, Frazier 52 – Peyton Cowell scored 21 points and the Lady Raiders rode a big third quarter to a non-section win over the host Lady Commodores.
Waynesburg (1-1) led 18-14 after the first quarter and 29-28 at halftime before surging to a 48-33 advantage in the third and stayed in control from there.
Avery Davis tallied 14 points and Mya Smith had 11 for the Lady Raiders.
Allie Yauch paced Frazier (0-2) with 16 points and Clea Bozek chipped in with 10.
Avella 54, Carmichaels 25 – Ava Frank led a trio of Lady Eagles in double figures with 17 points in a non-section victory over the visiting Lady Mikes.
Sydney Strope followed with 13 points and Haleigh Rush added 10 for Avella (2-1).
Joselyn Carter had seven points for Carmichaels (0-3).
Southmoreland 41, Derry 21 – Olivia Aumer scored a game-high 19 points as the Lady Scotties (1-1) topped the host Lady Trojans (0-1) in a non-section game.
Beth-Center 52, Charleroi 15 – Callie Dorsey dropped in a game-high 11 points as the Lady Bulldogs (2-1) cruised past the host Lady Cougars (0-3) in a non-section game.
Men’s basketball
Chatham 64, Waynesburg 60 – The Yellow Jackets’ winning streak ended at four after a tough battle with the first-place Cougars in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference game.
PJ Suggs led Waynesburg (2-2, 3-5) with 17 points and also had five rebounds and three assists. Antone Baker contributed 13 points and three steals and Jalen Goins had 10 points.
Diaun Pinkett had 22 points for the Cougars.
Waynesburg used a 16-2 run to take a 47-39 lead with just under 13 minutes left but Chatham (5-0, 7-1) fought back to pull out the win.
Women’s basketball
Chatham 71, Waynesburg 54 – The Cougars took control by out-scoring the visiting Yellow Jackets 25-9 in the third quarter on their way to a Presidents’ Athletic Conference victory.
Julz Mohrbacher led Waynesburg (0-4, 4-4) with 15 points, 12 rebounds and five assists. Mia Henkins added 13 points and seven boards and Tori Wesolowski had eight points and four rebounds.
Alyssa Laukus scored 19 points for Chatham (2-2, 4-3) and was followed by Ashlie Louden (18) and Hannah Chenault (17).
