Friday’s local roundup: Leopards edge Red Raiders, 56-55
Tommy Davis sank two free throws with 10.8 seconds left in the game to give Belle Vernon a 56-55 victory over Uniontown in a battle of top-tier boys basketball teams at A.J. Everhart Gymnasium Friday night.
Davis had a double-double with 13 points and 16 rebounds, and Zion Moore scored a game-high 23 points, grabbed eight boards and had six assists for the Leopards (2-2). Cameron Jenko contributed eight points and six rebounds.
The Red Raiders led 15-12 after one quarter and 30-25 at halftime before Belle Vernon surged to a 44-42 advantage by out-scoring the hosts 19-12 in the third.
Kilan Milsom and Isaac Ellsworth topped Uniontown (1-1) in scoring with 17 and 16 points, respectively, and Calvin Winfrey III added 10. Ellsworth hit four 3-pointers and Milsom sank a trio of treys, but the Red Raiders made just 14 of 28 free throws.
Connellsville 66, Greensburg Salem 63 — Lucas Harwood scored a game-25 points, including a 3-pointer in the final seconds, to give the Falcons a dramatic win over the Lions in the Hempfield Tip-Off Tournament.
Tyler Burkus added 16 points for Connellsville (2-0) and Jayden Mickens contributed 15.
Tyler Martin had 20 points fro Greensburg Salem which also got 15 points from Braedon Leatherman.
OLSH 46, Albert Gallatin 41 – Jake Johnson and Tiernan McCullough both scored 19 points as Our Lady of the Sacred Heart rallied past the Colonials at Brownsville’s Falcon Fest.
Albert Gallatin (2-1) led 10-7, 22-19 and 32-31 at the quarter breaks but the Chargers (2-0) outscored the Colonials 15-9 in the fourth quarter to claim the victory.
Darrin Ford led AG with 11 points and Jeremiah Darnell followed with seven.
Quaker Valley 65, Laurel Highlands 29 – Sam Chapman almost matched the Mustangs’ total output with 28 points as Quaker Valley rolled to victory at the Derry tournament.
Nic Cohen had 12 points for Quaker Valley (2-1).
Brennen Varney and Aiden Black scored six points apiece for Laurel Highlands (0-2).
California 47, Yough 41 – The Trojans outscored the host Cougars 27-20 in the second half to claim a non-section win.
Caden Monticelli totaled 12 points and 15 rebounds for California (1-1) which also got a team-high 13 points from Hunter Brown.
Charlie Quinn had 15 points for Yough (0-2) which also got 11 points from Ryan Westerman.
Beth-Center 45, Frazier 37 – The Bulldogs jumped out to a 16-9 lead in the first quarter and hung on from there for a non-section win over the host Commodores.
Parker Amos had 14 points for Beth-Center (2-1) and was followed by Jason Zellie with 10 and Jonah Sussan with nine.
Kolby Stewart led Frazier (1-3) with 11 points and 10 rebounds and Conlan Higbee also had 11 points.
Union 51, Jefferson-Morgan 43 – Lucas Stanley scored 22 points and the Scotties fought off the Rockets for a win at the Fort Cherry tournament.
After a 13-13 tie in the first quarter Union took a 32-29 halftime advantage and held a 41-35 lead after three.
Maddox Thompson had 12 points for Union (3-0).
John Woodward and Dayten topped J-M (1-1) in scoring with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Washington 60, Waynesburg Central 45 – The host Prexies shot out to a 19-4 lead in the first quarter on their way to a non-section win over the Raiders.
Tristan Reed topped Washington (2-1) in scoring with 23 points and was followed by Tayonne France (14) and Will Callan (13).
Cole Headlee scored 14 points for Waynesburg (0-2) which also got 11 points from Alex VanSickle and 10 rebounds from Alex Eck.
Monessen 65, Fort Cherry 50 – Devontae Robinson poured in 27 points and the Greyhounds sprinted away from the host Rangers with a 20-9 edge in the fourth quarter to win a non-section clash between small school powers.
It was the season opener for both teams.
Class A Monessen (1-0) also got 11 points from Tyvaughn Kershaw.
Coach Dan Bosnic’s Greyhounds led 22-17 after one quarter but Class AA Fort Cherry (0-1) rallied for a 31-29 halftime advantage. Monessen went back ahead, 45-41, by outsourcing the Rangers 16-10 in the third quarter and pulled away in the final frame.
Shane Cornali led the Rangers with 14 points and was followed by Tyler Wolfe (11) and Jack Kitzmiller (10).
Bentworth 52, Carmichaels 30 – The Bearcats lept out to a 17-8 lead in the first quarter and pulled away from there for a non-section win at Carmichaels.
Ben Hays led all scorers with 21 points for (2-1).
Robbie Wilson-Jones tossed in 12 points for Carmichaels (0-2).
Avella 66, Mapletown 43 – The Eagles outscored the host Maples 24-8 in the second quarter to take control on their way to a non-section win.
Bryce Wright and Brayden Fuller led the way for Avella (2-2) with 18 and 16 points.
Tyler Howard scored 13 for Mapletown (0-2) and Lucas Stevenson followed with 10.
McGuffey 51, West Greene 33 – Ayden Cunningham’s 26 points keyed the Highlanders’ non-section win at West Greene.
Eric Jacob added 11 points for McGuffey (3-0). Darren Knight paced the Pioneers (1-1) with 12 points.
Carrick 81, Geibel Catholic 59 – Brayden Fisher led a group of four double-digit scorers with 29 points as the Raiders defeated the Gators at the Brentwood tournament.
Stephon Malloy added 14 points for Carrick (1-1) and was followed by Treshaun Beasley (13) and Kelenn Ward (10).
Evan Strimel was one of a trio of Geibel players to hit twin figures with 14 points. Seth Dolan added 12 and Eahn Stevenson had 10 for the Gators (1-1).
Southmoreland 57, Eden Christian 50 – Noah Felentzer scored 21 points in the Scotties’ win in the Carlynton Tip-Off Tournament.
Elliot Premus had 10 for Southmoreland (1-1).
Mason Dean scored 26 points for Eden Christian (0-2).
Armstrong 62, Mount Pleasant 34 – Carter Schotting scored 19 points, Garrett Brumbaugh tallied 12 and Memphis Cypher had 11 as the River Hawks (2-2) knocked off the Vikings in a non-section game.
Jonah Townsend had 11 points for Mount Pleasant (0-4).
Girls basketball
West Greene 45, McGuffey 39 – Kendra Tharp scored 16 points and the Class A Lady Pioneer hung on after building a 13-point lead for a non-section victory over Class AAA McGuffey.
The Lady Highlanders led 14-11 after the first quarter but West Greene outscored the visitors 28-12 over the middle two frames to go up 39-26. McGuffey held a 13-6 edge in the fourth quarter.
Madelyn Roberts added 12 points for the Lady Pioneers (4-0).
Taylor Schumacher scored a game-high 19 points for the Lady Highlanders (3-1).
Albert Gallatin 48, Connellsville 39 – Mya Glisan scored a game-high 24 points as the host Lady Colonials defeated the visiting Lady Falcons for the second time in four days.
Albert Gallatin (2-0) also won at Connellsville, 41-38, on Tuesday.
Grayce Panos followed Glisan with 16 points.
Whitney Bobish had 13 points for the Lady Falcons (0-3) who also got 10 points from Sara Tinkey.
Brownsville 60, Bentworth 23 – Skylar Gates poured in 25 points and Ava Clark added 21 as the Lady Falcons soared past visiting Bentworth at Brownsville’s Fan Fest.
Zhariah Reed also hit double digits for Brownsville (1-0) with 10 points.
Aubrie Logan topped the Lady Bearcats (1-1) in scoring with 10 points.
Laurel Highlands 75, Allderdice 33 – Aierra Jenkins led a group of four Fillies in double digits with 22 points in a win over visiting Allderdice.
Also reaching double figures for Laurel Highlands were Ayrianna Sumpter (18), Miya Harris (15) and Taylor Schwertfeger (13).
Chartiers-Houston 51, Uniontown 28 – Allison Wingard scored 18 points in the Lady Bucs’ non-section win over the Lady Raiders at Brownsville’s Falcon Fest.
Ava Kolovich contributed 12 for Chartiers-Houston (4-0).
Emily Myers led Uniontown (0-3) with nine points.
Geibel 62, Steel Valley 11 – Emma Larkin rang up 25 points in the Lady Gators’ non-section win over visiting Steel Valley.
Mallory Clemmer followed with 18 points and Ava Henderson chipped in with 11 for Geibel (4-0) which zoomed out to a 27-2 lead in the first quarter.
Taylor Kenney had six points for Steel Valley (0-3).
St. Joseph 51, Frazier 21 – Gia Richter and Kasey Cienik each scored 14 points as host St. Joseph defeated Frazier in tournament play.
Bella Bartolovic had 11 points for St. Joseph (3-0).
Allie Monack tallied 10 points for the Lady Commodores (0-3).
Avella 63, Jefferson-Morgan 45 – Ava Frank (26) and Syd Strope (21) combined for 47 points in the Lady Eagles’ non-section win over the host Lady Rockets.
Bailey Cervone and Ava Wood each tallied 11 points for J-M (0-4) which also got 10 points from Leighana Gooden.
Southmoreland 48, Propel Braddock Hills 31 – Leah Moore scored 14 points in the Lady Scotties’ victory over Propel Braddock Hills at the Carlynton Tip-Off Tournament.
Lanie Moore followed with 10 points for Southmoreland (2-1).
Jasmine Smith and Kayla Knight had 13 and 11 points for Braddock Hills (1-1).
Hempfield 38, Mount Pleasant 16 – Allie Cervola scored 11 points as Hempfield (2-0) triumphed over the Lady Vikings (0-2) at the Greensburg Salem tournament.
