Local roundup: Red Raiders hold off Penn-Trafford, 68-64

Cam Dugan made a layup with 10 seconds remaining and Calvin Winfrey III sank a pair of clinching free throws with 0.6 seconds left to help Uniontown hold off host Penn-Trafford, 68-64, in the Section 1-AAAAA boys basketball opener for both teams Tuesday night.

“It was a great start to the section season against a really good team” Uniontown coach Rob Kezmarsky said. “It was a real good road win. We played really well in the first half.”

Winfrey scored a game-high 26 points for the Red Raiders (1-0, 3-1) who also got 16 points apiece from Notorious Grooms and Kelan Milsom.

The Warriors (0-1, 2-2) whittled a 19-point second quarter deficit to three on Brayden Stone’s basket with 23 seconds left but Grooms found Dugan with a long pass for a layup after the inbounds pass to make it 66-61.

Jack Weishaar’s 3-pointer with five seconds remaining sliced the gap to two but Winfrey’s free throws sealed it.

“Tory and Calvin played great floor games and Calvin ended the game with those free throws,” Kezmarsky said. “Kelan also had an all-around great game, on offense and defense.”

Winfrey upped his career points total to 970, leaving him 30 points shy of joining Grooms in the 1,000-point club. Grooms hit the milestone last season..

Uniontown led 20-13 after the first quarter and 39-25 at halftime. Penn-Trafford fought back to pull within 51-46 with a 21-12 edge in the third but the Red Raiders would never relinquish the lead.

Tyler Anthony paced the Warriors with 18 points, Zach Feldman followed with 15 and Stone wound up with 13.

Geibel Catholic 68, Brownsville 35 – Evan Strimel scored a game-high 22 points and was one of four Gators to hit double-digits in a non-section win at Brownsville.

Geible led 17-8, 32-18 and 52-29 at the quarter breaks.

Gary Tarbuk tallied 13 points for Geibel (3-1) which also got 11 points from both Roman Riccelli and Eahn Stevenson.

Jaiden Praster had 16 points for the Falcons (1-4) and Exzavier Vargas added 12.

Belle Vernon 74, McKeesport 63 – Zion Moore poured in a game-high 30 points to go with five assists and five rebounds as the Leopards triumphed over the visiting Tigers in a non-section game.

Belle Vernon trailed 51-50 after three quarters before out-scoring McKeesport 24-12 in the fourth to earn the victory.

Tommy Davis added 16 points and eight rebounds for the Leopards (3-2).

Lamont Perkins and Brian Jones led McKeesport (1-4) with 21 and 19 points.

Frazier 59, Mapletown 28 – Dalian McManus tossed in 18 points as the Commodores rolled past the host Maples in a non-section game.

Kolby Stewart and Conlan Higbee followed with 14 points each for Frazier (2-3).

Lucas Stevenon topped Mapletown (0-3) in scoring with seven points.

Southmoreland 50, Yough 24 – Noah Felentzer matched Yough’s game total with 24 points as the visiting Scotties cruised to a non-section win.

Southmoreland (3-1) led 20-7, 33-14 and 45-19 at the quarter breaks.

Jaiden Dixon-Bretzel had 11 points for Cougars (1-4).

Albert Gallatin 63, Ringgold 45 – The Colonials exploded for 25 points in the fourth quarter to break open a close game in earning a non-section win over the visiting Rams.

Shymere Wilson led Albert Gallatin (4-1) with 22 points, Darrin Ford followed with 15 and Jason Jackson added 13.

The Colonials led 9-8 after the first quarter and 22-17 at halftime before Ringgold (2-1) rallied to tie it at 38-38 heading into the final frame.

Szyair Dungee and Chris Wilson led the Rams with 14 and 11 points.

Avella 55, West Greene 50 – The Eagles used a 20-13 edge in the fourth quarter to pull out a non-section win over the visiting Pioneers.

West Greene led 12-11, 25-22 and 37-35 at the quarter breaks but couldn’t hold off Avella in the fourth.

Brayden Fuller led the way for the Eagles (3-2) with a game-high 20 points. Eli Maidment contributed 13 points and Bryce Wright had 12.

Patrick Durbin tallied 18 points for West Greene (1-2) and Parker Burns chipped in with 12.

Jefferson-Morgan 47, Bentworth 29 – Dayten Marion’s 15 points led the Rockets in a non-section win at Bentworth.

Jase Bedillion followed with 13 points for J-M (2-2), which outscored the hosts 30-16 in the second half.

Chris Harper had 11 points for the Bearcats (2-2).

Charleroi 65, Carmichaels 30 – The host Cougars put four players in double figures in a non-section win over the Mikes.

Shea Smith and Braeden Todaro scored 13 points apiece for Charleroi (3-2) which also got 11 points each from Noah Pletcher and Amaru Staub.

Robbie Wilson-Jones scored a game-high 14 points for Carmichaels (0-3).

Derry 47, Connellsville 36 – John Wasnick scored 14 points and Willie Stockett-Harter and Logan Irvin added 10 each as the Trojans (3-2) defeated the visiting Falcons (2-2) in a non-section game.

Girls basketball

Brownsville 57, Sto-Rox 19 – Ava Clark and Skyler Gates combined for 43 points as the Lady Falcons soared past host Sto-Rox (3-2) in a non-section contest.

Clark finished with a game-high 22 points and Gates followed close behind with 21.

Brownsville (3-1) led 16-8 after the first quarter then took complete command with an 18-4 advantage in the second quarter for a 34-12 halftime lead.

Geibel Catholic 61, Ligonier Valley 23 – Emma Larkin rang up 26 points and Ava Henderson hit four 3-pointers in scoring 19 as the unbeaten Lady Gators cruised to a non-section win at Ligonier Valley.

Mallory Clemmer added 12 points for Geibel (6-0).

Adleigh Myers led Ligonier Valley (1-2) with eight points.

Frazier 61, Avella 58 – Malana Burton led a balanced attack and the host Lady Commodores rallied in the fourth quarter in a back-and-forth battle for a non-section victory over the Lady Eagles.

Avella (3-2) led 13-11 after the first quarter, Frazier fought back to take a 29-26 halftime advantage but the Lady Eagles regrouped and surged to a 48-41 lead after three quarters.

The Lady Commodores out-scored the visitors 20-10 in the final frame to earn the comeback win.

Allie Yauch followed Burton with 13 points, Chloe Harger added 11 and Taryn Bateman chipped in with 10 for Frazier (2-4).

Ava Frank and Sydney Strope tied for game-high honors with 20 points apiece for Avella.

Kiski 46, Connellsville 37 – Kiski outscored the visiting Lady Falcons 25-16 in the second half for the non-section win.

Rikiya Garcia led Kiski (5-1) with 12 points.

Elizabeth Painter tossed in nine points for Connellsville (0-6), which led 21-20 at halftime.

Greensburg Salem 70, Southmoreland 29 – Mya Heasley scored 11 points in the Lady Lions’ non-section victory at Southmoreland.

Greensburg Salem (3-1) put four girls in double figures with Sophie Beckerleg (11), Regan Kerr (10) and Vienna Jevicky (10) following Heasley.

Addyson Billheimer had 10 points for the Lady Scotties (2-3).

Burrell 42, Mount Pleasant 18 – Burrell led 26-3 at halftime on its way to a non-section win over the host Lady Vikings (0-4).

Bikayla Coury and Casey Brancato each scored 12 points for Burrell (4-0).

Wrestling

Belle Vernon 48, McKeesport 25 – The Leopards got pins from Leo Soto at 126, Deydon Soto at 138, Coby Hibner at 145, Connor Hoffman at 160 and Elijah Brown at 220 on their way to a non-section win over the Tigers.
