Belle Vernon's Max Henson won the WPIAL Class 2A tennis championship on Friday at Bethel Park. He has been selected as the Herald-Standard Athlete of the Week.

With his 6-1, 6-1 victory in the championship final on Friday at Bethel Park High School, Max Henson joined Gabby Dusi as a WPIAL Class 2A tennis champion from Belle Vernon.

Dusi, who won her second WPIAL title in the fall, broke through for the Leopards with their first district gold in 2023. The junior and Saint Francis University product was second in the state this past season.

Dusi and Henson have accomplished these feats without having a team.

Henson, who is also a junior, was the No. 1 seed entering the WPIAL Class 2A tournament after winning the Class 2A Section 2 championship in dominating fashion. He only lost one game in his four victories.

Henson opened the WPIAL tournament with a 10-0 victory over Blackhawk’s Mike Lanigan before a 10-0 triumph over Indiana’s Gabe Nettleton in the quarterfinals.

He topped Montour’s John Rohrkaste, 6-1, 6-0, in the semifinals before his straight-sets victory over North Catholic’s Justin Garvey in the final.

Henson will compete for a state championship May 23 and 24 at the Hershey Racquet Club. The first round and quarterfinals will be contested on May 23, while the semifinals and finals are on May 24.

Henson’s first opponent will be the District 8 (City League) champion.
