Raiders’ Burnfield qualifies for states in rifle

Waynesburg Central junior Emily Burnfield finished in a three-way tie for 12th place in the WPIAL Rifle Individual Championships on Thursday at Dormont-Mt. Lebanon Sportsmen’s Club. The Jefferson-Morgan student who competes for the Raiders also qualified for the state competition.

Waynesburg Central’s Emily Burnfield finished in a three-way tie for 12th place in the WPIAL Rifle Individual Championships on Thursday at Dormont-Mt. Lebanon Sportsmen’s Club to qualify for the state competition in rifle shooting.

Burnfield, a junior who attends Jefferson-Morgan High School but competes for the Raiders, scored a 200-16x to finish in a tie with Hempfield’s Aiden McVicker and Trinity’s Meredith Ashby.

Butler’s Jackson Jungling won the championship with a score of 200-20x. Hempfield’s Brooke Fanala was second and Armstrong’s Riley Wasson was third. Jungling won the third district championship for the Golden Tornado.

Burnfield was the only local qualifier, but Waynesburg and West Greene were well represented.

The Raiders’ Emma Lawson, Joe Withrow, Wyatt Franklin and Aylah Ford competed at the WPIAL finals.

The Pioneers’ Jlin Scott, Dylan Hughes, Savanna Somerville, Mackenzie Whipkley and Autumn Cumberledge were among the five shooters in the WPIAL championships.

The remaining state qualifiers are: Butler’s Rachel Katsko (4th) and Alyssa Miller (16th); Trinity’s Ryan Walther (8th) and Elizabeth Engle (9th); Upper St. Clair’s Erin Shehab (5th) and Ben Waldron (T-10th); Mount Lebanon’s Alexander Chadran (6th) and Whistle Foxbury (7th); and Woodland Hills’ Anthony Nemanic (T-10th).
