Miller fans 11 in Connellsville Legion victory

Mason Miller struck out 11 and didn’t walk a batter over seven innings to help lead Connellsville to a 9-2 victory over Smithfield-Fairchance in Fayette American Legion Baseball play Wednesday night at Smithfield-Fairchance.

Miller allowed two earned runs on five hits while throwing 88 pitches (66 strikes).

The top of the lineup was key for Connellsville, as leadoff hitter Grayden Gillott (1), No. 2 batter Chase Sankovich (2) and the third man in the order, Alex VanSickle (1) had four of the seven hits for the visitors. The trio also scored most of Connellsville’s runs, as Sankovich touched home plate three times, Gillott twice and VanSickle once.

VanSickle led Connellsville (3-0) in RBIs with three. Matt Firestone drove in two runs. Hunter Konieczny and Sankovich each knocked in one run.

Jonathan Kelly scored two runs and Gradin Hodge crossed home plate once.

Sankovich and VanSickle had one double apiece.

Cyrus Potkul had two hits, including a double, for Smithfield-Fairchance (1-3). Teammate Lucas Wilson doubled and drove in a run. Brayden Andrews had the other RBI for the home team. Andrews and Alex Dolobach each had a single.

Connellsville scored two runs in the first inning and four in the second for a 6-0 lead. Smithfield-Fairchance got on the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the second frame before the visitors put up one run in the third and two in the fourth for a 9-1 advantage.

Smithfield-Fairchance scored the game’s final run in its half of the fourth.

PV Mudcats 7, Oakland 1 — The PV Mudcats held a one-run lead before scoring six runs in the seventh inning for a victory in Fayette County Baseball League (FCBL) play in McHenry, Md.

The PV Mudcats, who are based in Keyser, W.Va., improved to 3-0 this season, while the Oaks fell to 1-2.

Sammy Viani pitched six scoreless innings for the win. He allowed three hits, struck out six and walked four.

All nine Mudcats in the batting lineup had a hit. Landon McAlpine, Easton Rhoten, Logan Rotruck and Tyson Shumaker had two hits apiece. McAlpine had two RBIs.

Rotruck and JJ Charlton doubled for the PV Mudcats.

Cody Cooper had two hits for Oakland.
