Daniels-Nimick’s play in goal key in Falcons’ victory
Connellsville goalie Nick Daniels-Nimick stopped 24 shots, including several from point-blank range and on rebounds, in the Falcons’ 3-1 victory over Burrell in PIHL Division 2 play on Thursday at CFS Bank Event Center in Rostraver Township.
Connellsville improved to 5-1-0-0 and sits in second place in the Division 2 Gold Division with 15 points. Knoch (5-3-1-0, 17 points) is at the top of the table, but has three games in hand on the Falcons.
Burrell, who is in the Blue Division of Division 2, dropped to 5-2-0-1, and is in second place in the standings with 16 points.
Connellsville killed off a penalty that occurred 51 seconds into the game before taking a 1-0 lead with 10:42 remaining in the first period on Mason Mazak’s even-strength goal. Mazak recorded his second goal of the year. He has one assist on the campaign for three points.
The Buccaneers drew level with 7:53 left in the first period on Dante Talian’s power play goal.
The Falcons killed off another minor penalty and the contest was tied at 1-1 after the first period. Burrell had a 6-3 edge in shots on goal in the opening frame.
The Buccaneers had a 13-6 advantage in shots on goal in the second period, but Daniels-Nimick was up to the challenge in stopping all 13.
Connellsville took advantage of its first power play when Nolan Wojnar scored the game-winning goal with a shot from the right point at 5:42 of the middle frame. Santo Crucio and Logan Hause assisted on Wojnar’s tally. Wojnar has four goals and three assists this year for a team-leading seven points.
The Falcons killed off two more minor penalties in the third period, and Sam Denny closed the game out for the home team on an empty-net goal with 28 seconds remaining. Denny has four goals this season.
Connellsville had a goal disallowed after Burrell tied the game in the first period, as the Falcons were called for a high stick on the tally.
The Buccaneers’ Madi George made 14 saves.
Connellsville returns to the ice on Monday against Neshannock (6-1-1-0, 20 points) at Hess Ice Rink in New Castle. The puck drop is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
The Lancers are in first place in the Blue Division.
