Harison Laskey didn’t waver in the final round of the Fayette County Open Sunday afternoon at Duck Hollow Golf Club, and as a result, successfully defended his county golf title.
Laskey shot an even-par 72 for a four-day total of 4-under 280. The Mercyhurst and Laurel Highlands graduate has now won three of the past four titles.
Enslen, who last won the county tournament two years ago, carded a 1-under 71 in the final round to finish two strokes behind Laskey.
Laskey started the round with a fortuitous birdie on the first hole.
“I drove way right. I had a little break in the trees. I hit it to 20 feet and rolled it in. That was a bonus,” said Laskey.
Laskey maintained the same strategy in the final round as he had in the previous three.
“All day, I wanted to give myself a birdie putt,” explained Laskey. “I don’t care if it’s 10 feet or 30 feet.”
Laskey was pleased with his play on the greens.
“My speed was very good today. My putter helped me secure this,” said Laskey.
Enslen countered Laskey’s birdie with one of his own on the second hole. The five-time champion looked for a seam to make a move on Laskey, but none was to be found.
“Unless he made a mistake, I’d have to push him,” said Enslen. “I was down three with three holes to go. I hit a bad tee shot on No. 16. That was the end of that.”
The final foursome featured former champions in Laskey, Enslen, Santino Marchitello and Pat Calvaresi.
Marchitello overcome a slow start with a strong back nine to card 1-over 73 and finish alone in third with even-par 284.
“I was 2-over through five holes and 5-over through eight,” said Marchitello. “I rallied on the back to shoot 1-over.”
“I really don’t know,” Marchitello responded when asked what happened in the first eight holes, adding, “Thank goodness for the back nine.”
Calvaresi shot even-par 72 on the last day for a fourth-place finish with 4-over 288.
Enslen and Laskey played in the same group all four rounds. Marchitello played the final two rounds with the pair, and Calvaresi joined the group for the final round.
“It was really cool. I had a blast playing with Jeremy all four rounds of the tournament. It’s a lot of fun,” said Laskey.
“I had fun playing with those guys,” said Marchitello. “It’s fun watching Harison play.”
“I’m happy with my four days,” added Marchitello. “Other than a couple lip outs, I’m happy with my four days.”
Fred David and Ron Jones tied for fifth place with a four-day total of 290.
