Chris McCollough pitched a five-hit shutout to lead Belle Vernon to a 5-0 victory over Waynesburg on Tuesday in Fayette American Legion play at John DiVirgilio Field.

McCollough had eight strikeouts, walked two and threw 100 pitches in seven innings of work.

Max Gauden’s RBI single in the first gave Belle Vernon (3-2) a 1-0 lead. The home team extended its advantage to 3-0 in the third with two runs. Bob Boyer had an RBI single, and with runners on first and third, Boyer was caught in a run-down between first and second, but Jake Rathway scored from third.

Belle Vernon added one run in the fourth and sixth.

Waynesburg’s Nick Zator had the only extra-base hit with a double.

Kylar Amos pitched a strong six innings with six strikeouts and one walk, but gave up five runs on six hits in taking the loss. Waynesburg committed three errors.

Belle Vernon hosts Smithfield-Fairchance today at 6 p.m. at John DiVirgilio Field.
