Starting pitcher Austin Petraglia helped his own cause with a two-run triple in the third inning in Connellsville’s 5-2 win over Smithfield-Fairchance on Thursday in Fayette County American Legion Baseball League play at Thomas E. Sankovich Field.

The game was called in the bottom of the fifth inning when the Smithfield-Fairchance coach was ejected after arguing with the umpire and the visiting team did not have a certified coach remaining to coach the team.

Teammate Brant Bonadio had a run-scoring triple as part of a three-run inning that gave the home team a 4-1 lead. Both teams traded runs in the fifth, but Smithfield-Fairchance (4-4) wasn’t able to sustain enough offense against Petraglia, who had five strikeouts in five innings to earn the win.

Petraglia also singled for two hits, and teammate Gage Gillott had two base hits. Cole Shearer and Cade Warrick each had a double for the home team.

Josh Szerensci and Jason Thoresen doubled for Smithfield-Fairchance, and Creed Potkul had two singles.

Willie Palmer took the loss, striking out five in three innings.
