Here is the latest ACC sports news from The Associated Press
UNDATED (AP) — Oklahoma dropped four spots to No. 10 after being upset by Kansas, the top five teams held their places and the Jayhawks and rival Kansas State both entered The Associated Press college football poll. Georgia is No. 1 for the 20th straight week, receiving 48 of 63 first-place votes, distancing itself from No. 2 Michigan. The Wolverines, who were off Saturday after a week of being in the news for an NCAA sign-stealing investigation, received nine first-place votes. No. 3 Ohio State and No. 4 Florida State each received three first-place votes. No. 5 Washington stayed a spot ahead of Pac-12 rival Oregon.
CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — Clemson starting tailback Will Shipley is in concussion protocol and his status against No. 12 Notre Dame this week is uncertain. Tigers coach Dabo Swinney said scans on Shipley’s neck came back negative, which is what they were most concerned about after the hit at the goal line against North Carolina State. Shipley laid on the field for a few moments before walking to the sidelines on his own power. He did not return for the second half Clemson’s 24-17 loss to the Wolfpack. Swinney said it won’t be until later in the week that he’d know about Shipley’s availability.
UNDATED (AP) — College basketball coaches are becoming more like CEOs on a 24/7-style schedule. The transfer portal along with name, image and likeness legislation have turned them into businessmen as much as coaches. Not only must they continue to recruit high school players but they must also mine the transfer market and help to arrange NIL packages, all while ceaselessly recruiting the players already on their roster lest they transfer elsewhere. As Duke coach Jon Scheyer lamented, “I spend way more time doing other things besides basketball, because you have to.”
UNDATED (AP) — The women’s basketball season gets underway on Nov. 6 with high expectations after last season’s record-setting year. LSU’s Angel Reese and Iowa’s Caitlin Clark return, trying to get their teams back to the national championship game. Kim Mulkey has reloaded the top-ranked Tigers with a pair of talented transfers eager to help LSU win back-to-back titles. UConn also hopes to be back in the championship discussion with Paige Bueckers finally healthy again. Iowa’s Clark has the NCAA scoring record in her sights.
UNDATED (AP) — The upsets have arrived. Kansas made it two weeks in a row with an unranked team beating a top-10 team. The Jayhawks knocked No. 6 Oklahoma out of the ranks of the unbeaten to snap an 18-game losing streak against the Sooners. OU’s loss comes a week after then-No. 10 North Carolina lost to Virginia at home, and three days before the first College Football Playoff rankings are released. Several other CFP contenders, including No. 1 Georgia and No. 4 Florida State, rolled. None more impressively than Oregon. Clemson, meanwhile, is now a long way from playoff conversations.
