“Essentially, ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ is about what happens when the trust between husband and wife is threatened, and what it takes to restore it when it is damaged. It is heartening to think that Kubrick’s final film concludes on a note of hope and reconciliation; the last sequence ranks among the most touching scenes that he has ever directed.

“This is all the more impressive when one considers that happy endings in Kubrick films are scarce.”
