local The State Theatre Center for the Arts in Uniontown will present the following shows during its 15th anniversary season. Saturday brings “The Flying Karamazov Brothers” back to the theater. The show features silly dances, world-class juggling feats and lots of audience participation. The New Sigmund Romberg Orchestra and Soloists will bring “A Viennese Christmas” to the theater on Dec. 17. Feb. 5 will bring “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.” “My One and Only,” a musical comedy featuring Gershwin classics, will be presented March 15. The Reduced Shakespeare Company’s production of “All the Great Books (abridged)” will be presented April 2. “Steel Magnolias,” a story that takes place in Truvy’s Beauty Shop, will be presented April 10. Paul Consentino and The Boilermaker Jazz Band will serve up jazz, swing and old-time ballads in the New Orleans style on May 7. “Christmas for Two,” an intimate Christmas concert performed by Paul and Barb Carmer, will be presented at 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. today and Dec. 17 at the Cramer Performing Arts Studio, 13 Pittsburgh Road, Uniontown. The Point Marion Lions Club will hold a benefit fund-raiser every second Saturday of the month through June 2005. The events are held at the Lions Club skating rink and begin at 6 p.m. This is a smoke- and alcohol-free event. Guests can enjoy a sandwich and soda with the live music and entertainment. The Country Rollers will perform on Dec. 11. Open stage will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. along with Ray Rhodes and Friends. The Asbury Festival Series will present “Amahl and the Night Visitors,” Menotti’s Christmas opera, at 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 12, at the Asbury United Methodist Church, located at the corner of Beeson Boulevard and Dunbar Street, Uniontown. Performed in England, the opera is about a poor crippled shepherd boy whose act of unselfish love brings about a miracle. Judy Hopson’s “Hands-on Pottery Party” will repeat from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec 10, and 2 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, at 64 Crayons Cultural Center. Hopson will offer pottery lessons on the wheel with her usual 100 percent guarantee that anyone from 8 to 80 will produce a successful product on his or her first attempt. She supplies the clay, dries and glazes the finished pot all for a small fee. In addition to the hands-on events, Hopson’s own pottery will be on sale on the third floor of the Thompson House from Dec. 9 through Jan. 6. An invitation-only opening of Hopson’s third annual Christmas exhibit will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. at 64 Crayons Cultural Center. Those who made pots with Hopson at her November pottery parties may collect their handiwork at the opening or at any time during Hopson’s exhibit. The Brownsville Historical Society will host the Christmas Candlelight Tours at Nemacolin Castle on Front Street in Brownsville every Friday, Saturday and Sunday in December and January. Hours are from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday and 2 to 9 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. The castle will be closed on Dec. 24 and 25. Light-up night will be held on Nov. 26 with a marshmallow roast over an open fire, visit with Kris Kringle, storytelling, and a craft booth where children 12 and under can make a gift for someone special. “Christmas Cheer” will serve as the theme this year with the rooms adorned with some fresh trees and greens, flowers and traditional decorations. A new Christmas attraction named “Lights on the Mountain” will open to the public today at Woodland Zoo, located along Route 40 in Farmington. The display, which will feature more than 6,000 lights used in 40 new displays, will continue through Jan. 2. The exhibition is unique because the theme depicts the animals in the surrounding zoo as well as other important landmarks of Fayette County area history. There is no admission fee, but carload donations will be accepted from the visitors to help pay for the cost of electricity and to help support the animals at the zoo. Woodland Zoo will also cooperate with the THON Team from Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus in raising funds to benefit the Four Diamonds Fund. The zoo will be open during the day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Some of the images included in the lighted displays are a cougar, a wolf, George Washington, a Conestoga wagon and many others. “Homes for the Holidays” annual house tour sponsored by the Crime Victims’ Center will be held from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 12. The tour will feature four beautiful homes and one unique historic bed and breakfast. Welcoming guests will be Dr. John and Lisa Sunyecz, Jim and Lisa Dunn, Bill and Darlene Duall and Chris and Kristina Kearns. Also featured will be the Inne at Watson’s Choice Bed and Breakfast owned by Bill and Nancy Ross and the newly renovated “Stable,” which is now a meeting and conference center. “Jenny Lind’s Swedish Christmas” returns to 64 Crayons Cultural Center from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8. Lind sings numbers from her American tour, Sweden’s famed Christmas elf, Jul Tomten distributes gifts, the winners of the 64 Crayons and Geezers’ Books Outstanding Contributers Awards receive proper recognition, a light smorgastbord graces the tables, and P. T. Barnum collects his modest fee from the guests. The Andy Warhol Museum “Off the Wall” performance of “The Spoken World” will be held on Saturday, Jan. 15, at 8 p.m. at the Museum. Marc Bamuthi Joseph commands a stage and sways an audience with his sharp, urgent and elegant verse, his passionate dancing and his stunning transformations. The Greater Morgantown Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) and MountainFest LLC have announced the Wild and Wonderful MountainFest Motorcycle Rally, scheduled for next July 29-31 in Morgantown, W.Va.
