“A Peculiar Christmas,” a fast-paced holiday show, which takes the audience on a journey of realization that everyone needs Christmas, will be held at 7 p.m. today at Abundant Life Church, 1239 Brownfield Road, Uniontown. Flatwoods Productions will present the family Christmas play, “Yes Virginia, There is a Santa Claus,” by Andrew J. Fenady today through Sunday. For more information, call 724-437-2790.The Holiday Treasures Art Show and Sale will be held in the earth sheltered home of Scott and Barbara Campbell on the Grindstone Road today and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Celebrating a 22-year tradition, the show features arts and crafts done by local artists, including watercolors, calligraphy, monotypes, collages, weaving, wool appliqu?, Pysanky, sculptures in wood, beaded jewelry, cross stitch, handmade baskets, American folk art, handspun yarn and a varied selection of gourmet foods with samples for tasting.
California University of Pennsylvania’s The Nutcracker will be performed in Steele Auditorium on the Cal U main campus today at 8 p.m., Saturday at 2 and 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Cal U’s Department of Theatre and Dance and the Mon Valley Dance Council invite the public to join them in celebrating the magic of Christmas with the timeless tale of a little girl and her Nutcracker doll. The annual Hopwood Village Light-Up Night celebration will be held on today. Activities will begin at 5:30 p.m. when the new village Christmas wreaths and a community Christmas tree with decorations made by students at Hutchinson Elementary School will be lighted. School and community groups, including the Greater Uniontown Chorale, Laurel Highlands High School jazz band and Hutchinson students, will provide music throughout the evening. Santa will arrive on a Hopwood Volunteer Fire Department truck at 6:30 p.m. and distribute treats to the children. Activities will be held in the parking area of the Hopwood Center (Four Star Pizza). Many of the businesses in the village will be open to celebrate the holiday season.
The seventh annual “A Country Christmas in the Greenhouse” will be held through Sunday in Duda’s Greenhouse in Republic. The show will feature crafts by more than 30 local crafters with plenty of choices for Christmas shopping. Live wreaths, swags and blankets will be sold. Show hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. The Fairchance Free Methodist Campground located along Route 857 across from Sweet Pea Gas Station will host a luncheon with Santa on Saturday. The event, which will begin at noon, will include lunch, story time (the Christmas story) and picture time with Santa. Each child will also receive a gift from Santa. Lunch will include hot dogs, chips, cookies, donuts and a drink for a small cost. There will also be sauerkraut and hot dogs for the parents available at the same cost. The United Way will hold a celebration from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Uniontown Firemen’s Social Hall on Dunbar Street, Uniontown, to thank its donors, sponsors and volunteers. Country music will be presented Saturday at the Sagebrush Round-Up on Bunner Ridge near Fairmont, W.Va. Featured acts include Ray Hileman & The Wheels of Country, Burt Arbogast & Old Habits, Tara Reel and Joe Hall & High Country. Country music begins at 6 p.m. with the open stage. The house band Stagecoach backs single acts and new talent. The scheduled portion of the show starts at 7 p.m. and continues until about 11 p.m. There is a donation for adults. Two Christmas concerts and a doll show will be held at Waynesburg College this weekend. The Department of Music will present a Christmas music concert by the Waynesburg College Lamplights (the college choir) and the Waynesburg College Band in the Performing Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday. The concert is free and open to the public. The college’s Paul R. Stewart Museum will be open from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. Saturday and from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m. Sunday, so that concertgoers can stop in before the concert to take a look at more than 100 collectible doors currently on display at the museum. The doll collection was a gift to the college from Dr. Eleanor VanDyke Pearson, a 1929 Waynesburg graduate who died in 2002. The collection includes more than 100 doors from the Franklin Mint, Danbury Mint, Lenox and others. A wide variety of historical and literary characters, including Romeo and Juliet, Marie Antoinette, Annie Oakley, Mother Theresa, Marie Curie, Jackie Kennedy and others are represented in addition to a Victorian bride and characters from various fairy tales. The museum is open to the public by appointment.
