Dec. 5, 2004 Membership drive

Thanks to the public, the Ft. Mason Historical Society had a very successful membership drive for the year 2004. The total membership for the year grew to 111.

Besides showing support for the historical society, members made it possible for the organization to be eligible for grants.

The past year has been an exciting one. Members have received many phone calls and lots of mail from people interested in many of the projects…from genealogies to information about our area in the “good ole days.” People from all over the country have visited the museum and we have made many new friends.

Believe it or not, we are now mailing to people in 28 states whom either have connections to this area or whose ancestors settled here at some point. These ties to each other may span years and generations, but they are still strong.

We are asking for your continued support in the coming year. Contact president Clara Pento at 724-583-2069 or any member to obtain a membership form. New members and donations are welcome.

Masontown CROP Walk

In June, some 60 members of a dozen churches participated in the Masontown-German CROP Walk. More than $5,000 was raised. It is the procedure to return all donations to Church World Service, the sponsoring organization of the CROP Walk, and then 25 percent returns to the local community to assist local agencies addressing hunger issues. This month, appropriately enough in the month of Thanksgiving, that money returned home.

Three local organizations benefited from the walkers’ efforts. A check for $252.63 was presented to First Presbyterian Church of Masontown Food Cupboard, another check for $252.63 was presented to the Masontown Unit of the Salvation Army Food Cupboard and a third check was presented to McClellandtown Presbyterian Church Food Cupboard in the amount of $754.89. McClellandtown is the primary food distribution center for the needy in this particular area.

Rev. Lewis, coordinator of the 2004 Walk wishes to thank everyone involved – walkers, sponsors, and water distributors on walk day. For more information about the local CROP Walk, Rev. Lewis can be reached at 724-583-9207.
