Jazz singer to open for Motown group
The soulful jazz singer Penny Wells of Detroit will open at 7:30 p.m. tonight for The Temptations at the State Theatre Center for the Arts in Uniontown. Wells is coming off the high of the Ryder’s Cup golf event where she sang the national anthem to open for the Grammy award-winning Temptations.
Wells, a wife and a mother of three, was working 9-to-5 job at Wayne State University’s College of Life Long Learning and working 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. perfecting her soulful vocal skills.
Her supportive husband saw the strain and suggested she quit her 9-to-5 job in order to pursue her dream of a singing career. Four long years later, her hard work has paid off and Wells recently released of her CD titled “Shine.”
The CD is a hot array of smooth jazz and adult R&B, which had local DJ waiting with much anticipation for the finished project. In 2000, Wells entered a local competition to promote unsigned artists. The station promised to play the song a few times for exposure but it became so popular that the FM station made her song permanent in their line up.
Music lovers can share her gift and purchase her CD at the concert and on the Internet at cdbaby.com and AMAC Records.com. For more information about Wells, visit her Web site at pennywells.com.
