One major film arrives in theaters this weekend
2004 goes out like a lamb for film fans as only one major film (“Beyond the Sea”) arrives on New Year’s weekend. – “Beyond the Sea” with Kevin Spacey (“The Usual Suspects”) and Kate Bosworth (“Wonderland”).
Spacey stars in and directed his dream project, a PG-13 biography of the late singer Bobby Darin, who died at age 37 on Dec. 20, 1973. Bosworth co-stars as Darin’s wife, movie star Sandra Dee.
At the buck$ office
The Focker family spread plenty of cheer through theaters over Christmas weekend.
According to the Associated Press, “Meet the Fockers,” starring Robert De Niro, Ben Stiller, Teri Polo, Blythe Danner, Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand in a sequel to “Meet the Parents,” grossed more than $44 million over the holiday weekend. The PG-13 picture set a record for the best Christmas weekend opening ever.
The previous record holder was “Catch Me If You Can,” which grossed $30 million in 2002.
According to AP, the 10 top-grossing films last weekend were:
1. “Meet the Fockers” ($44.7 million)
2. “Fat Albert” ($12.7 million)
3. “Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events” ($12.5 million)
4. “The Aviator” ($9.4 million)
5. “Ocean’s Twelve” ($8.6 million)
6. “Darkness” ($6.4 million)
7. “The Polar Express” ($6.3 million)
8. “Spanglish” ($5 million)
9. “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou” ($4.8 million)
10. “The Phantom of the Opera” ($4.2 million)

The films scheduled to open on Jan. 7 include “Million Dollar Baby” (a boxing picture with Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman and Hilary Swank) and “Hotel Rwanda” (a fact-based drama about a massacre with Don Cheadle).
