Asbury series to open with organ recital
The 2004-05 Asbury Festival Recital Series will open on Sunday, Oct. 10, with an organ recital by Camille Thomas Bishop, organist at the historic Mulberry Street United Methodist Church in Macon, Ga. Bishop is a native of Macon. Her college studies began at Mercer University where she studied organ with James Carmichael.
She earned the bachelor of music degree in organ performance from Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, N.C., and a master of music degree in organ performance from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, where she studied with Jerald Hamilton.
Bishop is currently director of music and principal organist at Mulberry United Methodist where she has served since 1982.
She is active and in demand as an organ recitalist in the eastern U.S. as well as a frequent accompanist on both organ and piano.
She is an active member of the Macon Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and serves as the coordinator for the annual series of Cherry Blossom Organ Concerts, which are held annually at Mulberry Street United Methodist Church. She is also an active, contributing member of the Fellowship of United Methodists in Music, Worship and the Arts, having served both as a member of the design team for the Southeastern Jurisdiction and accompanist for the various choirs during Music Week at Lake Junaluska, N.C.
In her spare time during the summers, Bishop enjoys life at the theater where she has most recently been music director for such shows as “Jekyll and Hyde” and “The Scarlet Pimpernel.”
She is married to Bruce Bishop who is the administrator at Mulberry Street United Methodist Church. They have two grown children.
Bishop’s program will utilize a new Walker digital console and will include classics such as: J.S. Bach’s “Fantasia and Fugue in G Minor,” Felix Mendelssohn’s “Sonata No.3 in A Major” and Louis Vierne’s “Symphony 1, Opus 14, the Final.” She will also perform an organ duet with Asbury organist Jim Hutchinson titled “Evensong, Opus 68” by Charles Callahan.
Non-subscription single adult and student tickets for this season opener are available at the Greater Uniontown Chamber of Commerce offices, Judy’s Do Re Me Music, Ellis Music Store, all in downtown Uniontown and at Amend’s Jewelry in the Uniontown Mall.
They will also be sold one hour before the 7 p.m. performance on Oct. 10, at the Dunbar entrance to Asbury United Methodist Church of Uniontown.
Asbury is located at the comer of South Beeson Avenue and Dunbar Street and is handicapped accessible.
