Uniontown’s parks enjoy another busy season
Like the generations that came before them, children of the city of Uniontown spent their summer playing at the city’s parks and participating in a variety of activities run by the city’s recreation department. “I thought we had a pretty good season,” said Harold Bell, department director and city fireman. “We had a pretty good thing for the kids this year. I’d like to do more next year.”
The parks opened right after school recessed in June and closed Aug. 6.
Bell estimated that 200 to 300 kids played at the city’s five parks – Albright, Grant Street, Bailey, Ben Franklin and Lafayette – on any given day.
Under the guidance of park directors and workers, the children played kickball, dodge ball, softball and a number of other games.
Free lunches prepared by the Fayette County Area Vocational-Technical School were served to children at all the parks.
The baseball program at Bailey Park had another successful season, and kids from all the playgrounds were invited to a field trip to Idlewild Park. Private donations helped pay for the trip.
All the kids were also invited to a “fun day” at Grant Street Park.
The fire department brought an aerial truck and took children on rides on the boom.
Bell said 80 to 90 kids attended, and several parents volunteered to run the event.
A “fun day” was also held at Albright Park, and a “tiny tots” wedding was held at Bailey.
