local The Povertyneck Hillbillies will hold the third annual Frosty’s Hillbilly Jamboree Sunday at the Fayette County Fairgrounds. Proceeds from the event will go to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Western Pennsylvania Chapter in memory of Frosty Higbee, who lost his battle with acute myelogenous leukemia in May 2003. His son, Chris, is a member of the Povertyneck Hillbillies. The concert will feature seven local bands as well as a hog roast and activities for the entire family. Musicians from throughout Fayette County will gather at the park adjacent to St. Vincent dePaul Store, 70 N. Mount Vernon Ave., Uniontown, for an informal performance from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday. The performance is free. Donations of non-perishable food are welcome. Participants are asked to bring a chair or a blanket to sit on the grass.That Dam Ride, a popular overnight bicycling event, will be held Saturday and Sunday. The ride takes place along southwestern Pennsylvania’s beautiful Youghiogheny River Trail, and last year’s event attracted more than 400 visitors from eight states. Cyclists, from novice to expert, can choose from three mileage options – a 12-mile leisurely, guided tour of the Confluence area; a 30-mile-a-day ride from Connellsville and back; and a 70-mile-a-day-ride from Boston, Pa., and back. Pre-registration is required and ends today. Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area coordinates the event and proceeds benefit the Mon Yough Trail Council, Steel Valley Trail Council and non-profit organizations providing volunteer support and services. The Flatwoods Community Picnic will be held Sunday at Curfew Recreation Center. Sign in begins at noon with lunch at 1 p.m. Meat and beverages will be provided. Prizes, games and fun will be available. The Stewarts will provide music. Participants are asked to bring a covered dish.
The 33rd annual Car Show and Hog Roast sponsored by the McClellandtown Volunteer Fire Company will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Fireman’s Field in McClellandtown. Firemen will serve roasted hog sandwiches, roasted chicken, hot dogs, French fries, beverages and desserts. Flea market spaces are available. Joe’s Dusty Discs will entertain, and a 50/50 drawing will be held. The car registration fee benefits the fire company, and plaques will be awarded to the first 200 cars. Clarion University and The Cook Forest Sawmill Center for the Arts will hold the annual Cook Forest Folk Gathering, a weekend camp for folk musicians today through Sunday.
