local The Downtown Business District Authority is planning an “Arts In The City” event from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Storey Square on Main Street. The event will feature artists, blacksmiths, coppersmiths, iron workers, pewter workers, jewelry crafters, metal workers, potters, floral designers, photography and wood carvers. Penn State Coal & Coke Heritage authors and FRIENDS Art Group will also participate. A Children’s Art Zone with spin art, sand art and face painting will be featured. Main Street from Gallatin Avenue to Pittsburgh Street will be closed. Many entertainers are scheduled to perform throughout the day at Storey Square. Vendors will serve food in the 911 parking lot. Nemacolin Woodlands curator, Brian Leach, will be featuring the Hardy Family Art Collection in the lobby at the State Theatre. Christian Klay Winery will hold a wine tasting in the outer lobby of the State Theatre. Jace Erjavek, a noted pianist, will play during the showing of the Hardy Family Art Collection. The Uniontown Art Club will exhibit under the marquee of the State Theatre. An art group from Brownsville will decorate some of the windows on Main Street with the display of their works.

Area 51, a local band playing new and classic rock, will appear at 10 p.m. today at the Goal Post in Fairchance and at 7 p.m. Saturday at Mario’s on the Mon in Masontown. Band members include Jerry Onesi from Uniontown on bass guitar and vocals; Bob Mascia of Uniontown on drums and vocals; Jon Newman of Salisbury, Pa., on guitar; and Jeff Morris of Pittsburgh on keyboards and vocals.
Rare Form, a unique duo, will perform from 8 to 11 p.m. every Friday in Becker’s Shadyside Restaurant lounge and dining room, 998 N. Gallatin Ave., Uniontown. The duo will perform for cocktail and dinner guests. There is no cover charge for entertainment. The group will provide blues, jazz, rock, contemporary and gospel sounds sung by Kimberly Divine and set to music by Buddy Chase and his Hammond B3. The final Colonial encampment before Pioneer Days will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the George Washington Grist Mill on Layton Road, Perryopolis. Living history interpreters will be on hand to demonstrate skills and relay historical information of the 1750s to 1780s. Visitors will have a chance to meet a blacksmith and watch him hammer iron into a useful object. They can meet the women who will bake bread in an open hearth and sample their wares. A French provincial soldier will show visitors the weaponry of the day and his wife will cook over an open campfire. Visitors can listen to the story of life on the western frontier and the hardships faced by pioneers. The bakery, distillery and gristmill will be open to tour. This event is free and should be considered suitable for grade school and junior high students. In the event of heavy downpours from Hurricane Ivan, the event will be canceled. The annual 3K walk and picnic will be held today at Sampey Park in Perryopolis. This year’s race will be sponsored by UPMC. Registration for walkers will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the 3K scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Awards will be given in age groups for men and women ages 55 through 80. T-shirts will be given to pre-registered participants who walk the course. Ther will also be a registration fee for the non-walkers. A picnic lunch will be provided. A TLT SportsCard, Nascar, Cars and Comic Book Show will be held at the Uniontown Mall today through Sunday during regular mall hours. A turkey dinner will be held at the Son’s of Italy Hall in Perryopolis between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Sunday. Dinner will include fresh roasted turkey, stuffing, potatoes and gravy, green beans and dessert. Children’s portions and take-out orders are available. Walk-ins are welcome. All proceeds from the dinner will benefit the Perryopolis Area Heritage Society.
The Fort Allen Antique Farm Equipment Association will sponsor its 12th annual Harvest Festival Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Fort Allen Show Grounds in East Huntingdon Township, next to the West Overton Museums at 911 Porter Ave., Scottdale. Farming demonstrations, antique gas engines, models, antique tractors and equipment and displays will be featured. Operating flourmills, thrasher and bailer, saw mill, blacksmith shop and shingle mill, tractors, musical entertainment, daily parades, flea market and craft show and ice cream will be available. Breakfast and lunch will also be available in the kitchen. A tractor pull will be held at 6 p.m. Friday. An Old Farm Fling fund-raiser will be held at West Overton Museums in Scottdale from 6:30 to 11 p.m. Saturday. The sixth annual Pennsylvania Bavarian Oktoberfest will be held today through Sunday in downtown Canonsburg. Once again, the accent will be on German music and food during the three-day celebration with rides, fireworks and, of course, beer to chill and pour. New to the event are a street dance Friday night and a Sports Tent broadcasting the Pittsburgh Steelers game and NASCAR racing Sunday afternoon.
