CALIFORNIA – California University of Pennsylvania’s Department of Theatre and Dance will present four shows this spring. The productions include “The Trickeries of Scapin,” “Spring Gala,” “Student Directed One Acts” and “Treasure Island.”

“The Trickeries of Scapin,” a hilarious farce, tells the tale of crafty servant, Scapin, who promises to help his neighbor’s son and his own young master.

Both young men have fallen in love with penniless girls and need money to solve their dilemmas.

Scapin knows a good ruse will always win the day and enlists the neighbor’s servant in his schemes.

Scapin proceeds to spin a tale of kidnapping, foreigners and ransom.

Once the money is obtained, however, Scapin pushes further in order to seek revenge against his masters.

His revenge backfires and he must flee.

In the end however, the plot twists and turns, and it all comes to a hilarious end.

It’s fun for the whole family in Steele Auditorium. Performances are scheduled for Feb. 23-26 at 8 p.m.

The Spring Gala takes on a new twist at Cal U.

Taking a step away from the classical ballet, the department is excited to bring to the public a contemporary dance concert featuring choreography by three Cal U students as well as local choreographers.

The gala will showcase a variety of dance styles, including lyrical ballet, jazz and modern. The Spring Dance Gala will run in Steele Auditorium from March 31 through April 3 at 2 p.m.

“The Student Directed One Acts” will show in Steele Auditorium at 8 p.m. April 6-9. It will feature two different bills of one-act plays directed by Cal U students.

It is some of the most innovative theater that the university does.

The show contains adult language and situations. Seating is extremely limited.

California University of Pennsylvania’s final production this spring will be “Treasure Island.”

This children’s show, adapted from the age-old classic, is sure to capture the interest of all ages.

Come follow Jim Hawkins on his adventure to discover the buried treasure of pirate’s gold, when he finds a map in a dead man’s chest.

Watch as he battles with pirates both alive and dead, and watch Jim make some new friends with some of the strangest people along the way.

Performances in Steele Auditorium are scheduled April 28 and 29 at 8 p.m. and April 30 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.

There is a charge for tickets to the shows.

Cal U students are admitted free with a valid CalCard.
