New publication traces Mon Valley history
CALIFORNIA – Yohogania Press announces a new publication titled “Drifting Back in Time: Historical Sketches of Washington and Fayette Counties, Pennsylvania, including Monongahela River Valley.” The 229-page publication is a compilation of previously published articles in the Sunday editions of the Greensburg Tribune-Review and Washington Observer-Reporter newspapers.
The author is Dr. John Kent Folmar I, professor emeritus of history, California University of Pennsylvania.
The articles cover a wide range of topics and are arranged chronologically by topical dates. Most of the early articles relate to Monongahela River subjects.
Also highlighted are articles from the Monongahela Daily Republican and Uniontown Genius of Liberty, early Monongahela Valley weekly newspapers.
Folmar also brings the essence of daily events in the Monongahela Valley to life by 100-year comparisons and by capturing holiday celebrations and reactions to local events.
“The book gives a glimpse into another era many times removed from today. The localism of life in the 1800s is a fascinating aspect of our early history and is also important to understanding our past,” Folmar said.
Folmar previously edited “From That Terrible Field” and “This State of Wonders,” publications featuring Civil War letters of an Iowa frontier family. He is president of the Monongahela River Buffs Association and is editor of its publication, “The Voice of the Mon.”
