Brownsville to kick off weeklong events

2 min read

BROWNSVILLE – Weeklong activities will take place in Brownsville in conjunction with the local fire department’s Kennywood picnic. This celebration that began 92 years ago has sparked the interest of many homecoming activities, including a multitude of high school class reunions that are held the following Saturday.

A kick off that normally takes place on the Brownsville Riverfront Park will be held in the National City parking lot from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday. The event will feature Alabaster in Concert, a singing group that has performed gospel, show tunes and patriotic songs throughout the area, including the Fayette County Fair.

The Brownsville Rotary Club will continue its reading program for children 10 and under with stories and crafts, including a book swap table. Books will be available for all children.

On Tuesday, the Greater Brownsville Area Chamber of Commerce will sponsor its Mon River Cruise aboard the Gateway Clipper honoring Bob and Jackie Bevard.

There is a cost for tickets. Call 724-785-5631.

A fun-filled day of meeting friends and enjoying Kennywood Park will be held Thursday.

On Friday, Aug. 5, the Brownsville Area Alumni Association will honor postgraduates who have made a difference in the world at 6 p.m. at Hugo’s. There is a cost for tickets. Call 724-785-3800.

In conjunction with the weeklong activities that will take place in the community, the Brownsville Area Revitalization Corp. will sponsor the third annual Community Festival from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, at the Market Street parking lot across from Eckerd’s.

There is a location change this year due to the construction and renovation of the Brownsville Wharf Riverfront Park and the municipal authority upgrading sewer lines.

The Community Festival will feature activities, food booths and local organizational information.

The event will support the efforts of Brownsville’s rebirth. Music will be featured with the sounds of Sammy Bill & The Mon Valley Community Band from 1 to 3 p.m. and Girls in Black Hats from 3 to 4 p.m.

For more information about the activities, call Norma Ryan at 724-785-0387 or 724-323-4008 or Candy at 724-785-9331.
