Connellsville to celebrate bicentennial
CONNELLSVILLE – Connellsville will celebrate its bicentennial next year. Various events have already been scheduled, and more are in the works. During the month of February, the local AME churches will help the city promote pride in their heritage by providing celebratory “black history” events. On April 29, a grand Bicentennial Parade is scheduled with the theme “Honoring our Heroes.” Organizers say they want this to be reminiscent of the 1956 parade.
The second annual Geranium Festival will be held on May 20-21. And set to kick off the weekend of July 28 will be the Glenn Miller Orchestra.
Other events may include local bands, sporting events, reunions, church tours, food booths, carnivals, children’s events and fun for the community. As organizers researched the events of the 1956 Sesquicentennial, they found that many local citizens were involved, and that their budget was $50,000.
Even though the committee has worked hard for the past two years on fund-raising events for the bicentennial, committee members know financial help is needed.
The committee has outlined several levels of giving that have been established for contributions from the friends and families of Connellsville. The deadline for contributions is Dec. 15.
All participants will receive a certificate of appreciation.
