Museum to offer holiday tours
LAUGHLINTON – The Ligonier Valley Historical Society invites the public to the annual Candlelight Tours at Compass Inn Museum, located along Route 30 in Laughlintown, three miles east of Ligonier. The tours began Nov. 5 and continue on Saturdays and Sundays from 3 to 7 p.m. through Dec. 11. Until Thanksgiving, the authentically restored 1799 stagecoach stop inn, listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, is beautifully decorated for the harvest season with pumpkins, cornstalk and other natural accents gathered from the field and garden.
Cheery wood fires in three fireplaces and the glow of nearly 100 candles enhance the informative and entertaining tour. Costumed docents tell the story of transportation, life and harvest celebrations in the early 1800s. Visitors can relax by a crackling fire with a cup of hot mulled cider and a cookie and enjoy the hospitality of a 19th century inn.
After Thanksgiving, fresh pine and holly prevail to create a festive mood for the Christmas season. Christmas tours begin the Friday after Thanksgiving with special hours from 5 to 8 p.m. Families can coordinate a tour of the inn with Santa’s arrival in Ligonier during “Light-Up Night” festivities (Nov. 23 beginning at 6:30 p.m.). The tours continue that Saturday and Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m. Demonstrations in the cookhouse and blacksmith shop compliment the tour on Saturday, Nov. 25. Christmas candlelight tours continue on Saturdays and Sundays through Dec. 11 from 3 to 7 p.m. There is an admission charge for adults and students through high school. Children 5 and under are admitted free. Allow one hour for the tour. Walk-ins are welcome, however, reservations are requested for groups of 10 or more and required for groups of 20 or more.
