Nemacolin Woodlands to feature vintage airplanes, cars at show
FARMINGTON – Vintage airplanes and spectacular cars will take center stage at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort on Oct. 22 for the first-ever Nemacolin Air & Auto Show. With 15 airplanes and more than 100 classic cars expected, plus live entertainment and special rates for Nemacolin’s Off-Road Driving Academy experience, the Nemacolin Air & Auto Show brings something different to the car show circuit.
“We are extremely excited to be offering this air and auto event at Nemacolin,” said Brian Edward Leach, art curator for the resort who also oversees the Hardy Family’s private car and airplane collection. “This will be a great event for folks of all ages – to come out and see unique, rare airplanes and cars ranging from 1936 to 2005.”
Included in the list of planes flying in for the event are an L-21 Super Cub, Stinson L5, Chinese Yak, 1954 Piper Tri-Pacer, Stearman Biplane, 1958 Bellanca, OH-58 helicopter, T-34, and Sensa 185 Anfibian.
On the list for cars is everything from a 1936 Ford Coup, 1937 Chrysler Coup, 1951 MG and 1963 Thunderbird to various styles of Porsche, Jaguar, Cooper Mini, Thunderbird, Mustang and Corvette vehicles.
Nemacolin’s own Auto Toy Store will also be open for visitors to browse through – with a vintage 1909 Stanley Steamer Wagon, 1936 Cord Phaeton (that President Theodore Roosevelt rode in), 1926 Dusenberg II and much more.
Leach said the resort has added several special, fun activities to make the Nemacolin Air & Auto Show a very “different” type of show.
Activities begin at 10 a.m. with a special Fly-In Brunch located at Nemacolin’s Caddy Shack restaurant. The brunch prepared by Nemacolin’s award-winning chefs is available at a cost.
Public viewing of the planes and cars is from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., with judging of cars ending at 3 p.m. Admission is free, and the public will vote for winners in ten car categories. Trophy prizes will be awarded for the winner of each category, as well as for the Best of Show. The awards ceremony takes place at 5 p.m. All airplanes will be located on Nemacolin’s airstrip, and the cars will be in the parking lot at the Adventure Center/Sundial Ski Lodge.
From noon to 4:00 p.m., Nemacolin’s Off-Road Driving Academy, which features Hummer H1 and H2 vehicles, will be offering special 10 minute rides through The Rock training course at a cost.
KDKA radio’s “The Car Show” will broadcast live from the auto show area from 1 to 3 p.m., and the day wraps up with live music from The Davisson Brothers Band inside the Sundial Ski Lodge from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Again, admission is free to the public and to car owners wanting to enter their vehicles in the auto show. Car registrations are still being accepted, with a show limit at 175 vehicles.
