local California University’s Department of Theatre and Dance will present the student-directed one act festival. Guests will enjoy an evening that includes two shows directed and performed by university students. “A Bird of Prey” and “Nine in the Morning” will be presented at 8 p.m. today and Saturday in the basement of Steele Auditorium. Flatwoods Productions will present “War of the Worlds” by H. G. Wells will be presented today through Sunday at the Curfew Grange, located on Route 201 South and Buena Vista Road. Dry Knob School House Theatre, located on Dry Knob Road in Fairchance, will present “That’s What America Means to Me” at 7 p.m. today. This patriotic program will be performed by four school children. As the teacher begins the history lesson of the day, the children find the reading very boring. The teacher is experienced and quickly draws the students into realizing the meaning of liberty. Josie Byers plays the teacher, Miss Josie Dodd. Students are T.J. Finnell in the role of Gary. His sister Aleyx Finnell performs as Kim. Johanna Rankin will play the part of Belinda, and Amanda Rycek is cast as Mandy.Three local country bands and a special guest are set to “Raise the Roof – Countrified” on Saturday at the Geyer Performing Arts Center, 111 Pittsburgh St., Scottdale. The event will get underway at 7 p.m. with performances by Triple Creek, Girlz in Black Harts, Kortney Jean and special guest, Tyler Hough. The “Raise the Roof – Countrified” is a benefit for the Geyer Performing Arts Center roofing project. “Songs for the South,” a concert to benefit the victims of Hurricane Katrina and Rita, will take place on Sunday at the Friendship Hill National Park, located on Route 166 in Point Marion. The festivities will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. when the Albert Gallatin High School Band, Albert Gallatin North and South Middle Schools and the Timberlist Brigade will play. Donations will be accepted. All proceeds will be given to the Salvation Army for distribution. There is limited seating, so guests may want to bring lawn chairs or blankets. The event will feature a Chinese auction, coffee and cookies.Television star and comedian Bob Newhart will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday at the State Theatre Center for the Arts in Uniontown to kick off the theater’s 2005-06 season. Harvest Hayrides at Ohiopyle State Park will take place today at 5:30 p.m.; Saturday at 1:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. The riders will meet at the Kentuck Campground Amphitheater in Ohiopyle State Park. The Brownsville Area Revitalization Corp. (BARC) will hold its fourth annual homemade wine tasting event on Saturday at the Sons of Italy on Race Street in Brownsville. Guests will have a chance to sample local wins, Italian hors d’oeuvres and other food. The doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are available in advance and at the door and include an etched wine glass. In conjunction with this event, BARC is raising money to restore a pipe organ that is from the former Plaza Theater in Brownsville. For a donation, guests will receive a chance to win a trip to Niagara-on-the-Lake in Ontario, Canada, including an escape for three nights at an historic bed & breakfast, winery tours, Fallsview Casino and a carriage ride through Old Town.
