Paying tribute to the vocal groups, which fronted the big bands of the 1940s, Five by Design’s “Radio Days” interweaves music from Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey with segments from vintage serials, comedies and quiz shows. Honoring the Greatest Generation, Five by Design recreates a poignant time capsule of American life during the war years. As “Sentimental Journey” opens the production, the audience is transported to a seemingly simpler time when an evening’s entertainment emanated from the amber glow of vacuum tubes in a wooden cabinet.

It was the era when “Jack Armstrong, the All-American Boy,” “The Shadow” and “Little Orphan Annie” ruled the airwaves, hawking everything from shake-up mugs to pedometers and secret decoder rings – all for “one thin dime and a box top.”

The years of 1941-45 were etched on the minds of every America, and radio and music played a critical role in focusing the nation’s attention on victory.

“Radio Days” rebroadcasts the theme songs, commercial jingles and patriotic ditties that provided moral support for the men and women who defended the American home front.

“Radio Days” offers a chance for the audience to reflect and remember the men and women who served during World War II. “Radio Days” provides the audience with a time capsule of those experiences as America wept, fought the survived World War II.

Five by Design has crafted a musical retrospective from radio’s golden age. Tickets for the performance are on sale now. To purchase tickets, call 724-439-1360 or toll-free at 800-397-2554. The event is sponsored in part by WMBS Radio 590 AM.
