Flatwoods to present ‘The King and I’
FLATWOODS – Flatwoods Productions will present the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical “The King and I” for four performances on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 17-18 and Sept. 24-25. The Saturday performances are at 8 p.m. with the Sunday performances as matinees at 2 p.m.
The shows will be held at the Curfew Grange building in Flatwoods (across from the cemetery). It is located at the corner of Route 201 South and Buena Vista Road, Flatwoods.
Tickets for adults and children are available at the door for all performances.
On Saturday, Sept. 24 there will be the dinner option for an additional cost. Dinner will include salad, stuffed chicken breast, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, bread, butter, beverage and dessert. Dinner will be served beginning at 6 p.m., and reservations are necessary.

With music by Richard Rodgers, book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and based on the book “Anna and the King of Siam” by Margaret Landon, “The King and I” has long been a favorite of theater goers everywhere.
East versus West makes for a dramatic, richly textured and ultimately uplifting tale of enormous fascination. It is 1862 in Siam when an English widow, Anna Leonowens, and her young son arrive at the Royal Palace in Bangkok, having been summoned by the King to serve as tutor to his many children and wives.
The King is largely considered to be a barbarian by those in the West, and he seeks Anna’s assistance in changing his image, if not his ways. With both keeping a firm grip on their respective traditions and values, Anna and the King grow to understand and eventually, respect one another in a truly unique love story.
Along with the score, which includes “I Whistles a Happy Tune,” “Hello, Young Lovers,” “Getting to Know You,” “I Have Dreamed” and “Shall We Dance?” is the incomparable Jerome Robbins ballet “The Small House of Uncle Thomas.”
