Blacksmithing event slated
RICES LANDING – A blacksmithing event will be held on Saturday at the Young Foundry in Rices Landing, Greene County. A collection of Yellin Tools will be on exhibit during the event, according to the Pittsburgh Area Artist-Blacksmiths Association (PAABA).
West Virginia artist Jeff Forester, who is known for his large-scale metalsmithing, will demonstrate the forging of stainless steel pipe and solid stock to make a tree-form during the event. A pipe cone using scrap stock also will be show.
In addition, Forester will explain and show how to use oxidation in the decorative process. Using all solid steel, he will demonstrate how to forge organic vine forms.
Bill Fugate, Jerry Smith and other ABA members also will be demonstrating in a blacksmith trailer. The trailer is outfitted for demonstrating and teaching – a school on wheels. A variety of short demonstrations will take place at the mobile facility.
While Forester is at the forge in the foundry and other ABA members are demonstrating on their wheels, a “Tool-Tique” will be going on. Rices Landing along with Greene County Tourism is holding a sale of tools in the Boat Barn. Anyone who is interested in renting table space is asked to call Norma Kline at 724-592-6184. Free tailgating sales are encouraged as always.
Baked goods made by Heather Forester will be available in the morning, and lunch will be provided for a reasonable price.
All funds will go to help support the foundry and its new direction with the help of Rivers of Steel.
There will be commemorative Young Foundry and Sons pottery for sale. These pots have been hand-thrown by Jennifer Adamson and PAABA members have made the handles to complete these collector’s items.
