‘Godspell’ comes to Flatwoods

FLATWOODS – Flatwoods Production will present the musical “Godspell” for three performances today through Sunday at the Curfew Grange in Flatwoods. Curtain time will be 8 p.m. today and Saturday with a matinee at 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets for the show are available at the door for all three performances. “Godspell” is the passion of Christ retold as a clown show in this bouncy rendition of the Gospel of St. Matthew. “Godspell” is an archaic version of the word gospel.

Playing the role of Jesus is Jonathan Rohlf of Brownsville. He is enrolled in the pre-professional training program at the Civic Light Opera Academy of Musical Theater where he is studying acting and dance. He is a voice student of Debra Mascia of Uniontown.

Past roles include the Scarecrow in “The Wizard of Oz,” Tom in “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,” Doody in “Grease,” Winthrop in “The Music Man,” Oliver in “Oliver,” Young Patrick in “Mame,” Sky Masterson in “Guys and Dolls Jr.,” the Baker in “Into the Woods Jr.,” Elvis in “School House Rock Jr.” and Kurt and Frederich in “The Sound of Music.” Professional credits include Will Jr. in “Will Rodgers Follies” for West Virginia Public Theater.

Te role of John/Judas is being by Scott Watson of Vanderbilt. He is a sophomore at Connellsville Area High School, where he plays basketball and baseball. He played the Cowardly Lion in “The Wizard of Oz” at Flatwoods and recently played the lead role of the Wizard in Connellsville High School’s production of “The Wizard of Oz.”

Other cast members include:

– Melissa DeSimone of Grindstone. Her favorite roles have been Maggie in “The Man Who Came to Dinner” and Meg Brockie in “Brigadoon” at Brownsville Senior High School. Most recently, she played Lisa in “Quilters.” She is an honor student at California University of Pennsylvania.

– Alyssa Hensel has previously performed in “Grease,” “The King and I,” “The Sound of Music,” “The Wizard of Oz” and “Quilters.” She is attending CLO’s musical theater academy and is an eighth-grade student at Connellsville Junior High West, where she is a member of the band, jazz band, chorus, the gifted program and the founder of the Drama Club. She studies voice, piano, saxophone, ballet, pointe, jazz and tap.

– Dimitri Lazzari is a 14-year-old from Charleroi, son of Charlene Diaz and Anthony Lazzari. He attends Charleroi High School. He was recently in Flatwoods’ production of “The Wizard of Oz” as the Tinman and played Albert Peterson in his high school production of “Bye Bye Birdie.”

– Amy Lucas is a sophomore at Connellsville Area Senior High School. She studies voice and piano and plays the flute. Lucas has performed at the Geyer Performing Arts Center and Connellsville Senior High School. This school year she participated in the PMEA District 1 Honors Choir and Chorus Festivals.

– Robert Mitchell is a recent graduate of Connellsville High School and was involved in the spring musical “Beauty and the Beast,” where he played several roles. He also is a member of the International Thespian Society.

– Katie Piotroswki is from Elizabeth has played the role of Mina Seward in “Dracula: the Musical,” Sister Amnesia in “Nunsense II,” Miss Carter in “It’s a Wonderful Life,” Kate in “Godspell” for Genesius Productions. She also has performed in “Les Miserables,” “Annie,” “The Wizard of Oz” and “The Phantom of the Opera” in school productions.
