April 23, 2006 Kindergarten registration

The Albert Gallatin Area School District will hold kindergarten registration this week: Monday, D. Ferd Swaney; Tuesday, A.L. Wilson; Wednesday, Friendship Hill; Thursday, George J. Plava; and Friday, Smithfield.

All registrations will be held from 9:15 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

To be eligible for kindergarten, a child must be 5 years of age on or before Aug. 31. To be eligible for first grade, a child must be 6 on or before Aug. 31. Children currently enrolled in the district’s kindergarten program need not register for first grade.

Parents must present their child’s official “Certificate of Birth” from the state in which their child was born (not the certificate from the hospital), and the immunization record at the time of kindergarten registration.

Immunization records must include the following: 4 DT, 3 Polio, 1 MMR and a second dose of measles vaccine, series of 3 Hepatitis B and Varivax (chicken pox.).

Kindergarten registration includes a vision, speech and kindergarten-screening test.

Children who will be moving into the Albert Gallatin Area School District should also register for school at this time.

Library friends dinner

The Friends of the German-Masontown Library will hold a spaghetti dinner in All Saints School Cafeteria today from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Costs are adults, $6 and children under 10, $3. Children under 3 may eat free. Takeouts are available.

Rummage sale

Springhill Furnace Presbyterian Church Youth Group will hold its annual white elephant rummage sale from 1 to 4 p.m. on May 6. This will include a bake sale and food items from the kitchen. The public is invited.

CROP Walk

The German-Masontown CROP Walk is set for May 21. Walkers will be seeking donations for sponsors. Twenty-five percent of the money raised stays in Masontown and McClellandtown. The other 75 percent goes to Church World Service.

Individuals wishing to walk may get sponsor forms from area local churches, or contact the Walk coordinator, the Rev. Bob Lewis at 724-583-9207.

This year there will be a two-mile walk as well as the traditional six-mile walk. Walkers may choose.

The goals for the CROP Walk this year are 10 groups participating, 100 walkers walking and $5,000 in donations. You can help to make it happen. For more information, call Lewis.

Pal’s Auxiliary

The Pal’s Club Social Ladies Auxiliary will meet on May 3 at 7 p.m. A memorial service will be held to honor deceased members. Chairman is Gerry Burkholder. Dianne Farrier will donate the $5 door prize.

Spaghetti dinner

The Fairchance Free Methodist Church, 53 S. Morgantown St., Fairchance, will hold a spaghetti dinner on May 6 from 4 to 7 p.m. Adult meals are $5 each and children 12 and under will be charged $3. Eat-in or take-out dinners are available.

Cash bash

Smithfield Volunteer Fire Department will hold a cash bash on May 6. Doors open at 6 p.m. and drawings start at 7. For tickets, contact the 857 Coffee Shop at 724-564-0907. Free food and drinks will be served.

Car, truck, bike show

The Masontown Volunteer Fire Department will hold a car, truck and bike show on May 7 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Registration fee is $10 per vehicle. The first 100 to register will receive a dash plaque and a large goodie bag. Tickets will also be given for a chance to win door prizes. Awards designed by Final Score Trophy will be presented at approximately 4 p.m. As always, there will be delicious food available and also offered is one of the largest Chinese auctions in the area.

Gypsy Geans, a local designer, will be on hand for those who would like to have a picture of their car put on at T-shirt.

Goodie bags will be given to the first 35 children registered. There will also be a coloring contest and a model car contest for children. Temporary tattooing will be available.

The public is invited to come and enjoy a walk down memory lane, enjoying oldies tunes and amazing vehicles from days gone by. This show is unique; it also features late model vehicles and motorcycles. This show offers something for everyone.
