Warhol Museum announces series

3 min read

PITTSBURGH – The Andy Warhol Museum announces the 2007 season of the “Off the Wall” performance art series. The upcoming season will feature another eclectic roster of nationally acclaimed performance artists, beginning with a performance by the wickedly creative British duo, and returning favorite, Lone Twin, followed by new work from the young provocative playwright, Young Jean Lee, the highly satirical monologist, Mike Daisey, a stunning multi-media operetta by performance artist/songwriter, Cynthia Hopkins, and a politically powerful work by acclaimed spoken word artist, Jerry Quickley.

And as a special addition, the series will conclude with two contemporary operas presented through a unique collaboration with Opera Theater of Pittsburgh.

Performances take place at the Museum and at the New Hazlett Theater. A meet-the-artist reception will follow each performance. Seating is open and not assigned. Tickets are available by calling 412-237-8300.

Tickets available by contacting ProArts at 412-394-3353 or visit www.proartstickets.org.

The schedule is as follows:

– “Nine Years” by Lone Twin at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Jan. 26-27, at The Warhol. Gregg Whelan and Gary Winters formed Lone Twin in 1997 to work with performance on ideas of place, context and orientation. The company has since created an internationally celebrated body of work, with regular showings across Europe, North America and Australia.

– “Songs of the Dragons Flying to Heaven” by Young Jean Lee at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, at the New Hazlett Theater This work presents Lee’s chaotic, disturbing and sometimes offensive take on her cultural background in all of its brutal honesty. The show is also about being in love.

– “Monopoly!” by Mike Daisey at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, at The Warhol. Viewed by many as a cross between Noam Chomsky and Jack Black, Daisey’s physical appearance and political interests resemble those of Michael Moore.

– “Accidental Nostalgia” by Cynthia Hopkins at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, March 16-17 at the New Hazlette Theater. How accurately do our memories mirror actual events? Is it possible, or even just, to repress unpleasant or tragic memories for our own psychological well-being? Hopkins, talented songwriter and theater artist, explores such questions through an intelligent but surprisingly playful operetta about the pros and cons of amnesia.

– “Live From the Front” by Jerry Quickley at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 14, at The Warhol. An internationally renowned performance poet, Quickley has made appearances on the HBO special “Def Poetry Jam” and the PBS documentary series “Senior Year.” A Los Angeles Poetry Grand Slam winner, his work has been published in Time Magazine, the Associated Press and The Los Angeles Times. “Live from the Front” is an actual account of Quickley’s visit to Iraq in the days before and during “shock and awe” to cover the pending, and soon actual war for KPFK and the Pacifica Radio Network. He brings that unique insight to “Live from the Front,” combining music poetry, video and powerful performance style to tell the story of his travels to and ultimate expulsion from Iraq.
