Student to display artwork at Waynesburg College
WAYNESBURG – Callie Paul, a senior art major from Waynesburg, will display a senior art show in the Benedum Fine Arts Center Gallery on the campus of Waynesburg College from Monday through April 7. An artist reception will be held in the gallery from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday. The public is invited to attend the show and artist reception. Admission is free. The Benedum Fine Arts Center Gallery is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday. To make an appointment to visit the gallery at another time, call 724-852-3274.
Paul said the main thing she would like people to experience from her exhibit is an awareness of the world around them.
“I used to paint and draw things that I knew people would like,” Paul said. “Now I do a lot to create awareness of what’s going on in other countries.”
Sculptures, paintings, drawings and ceramics will decorate the gallery to showcase some of the major works that Paul has created since her freshman year at Waynesburg College. She said she is particularly fond of crating pieces that maintain a sense of realism so that people can relate to them. A number of the gallery pieces feature photographs from her mission work in Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina.
She also has water colorings of Darfur to illustrate the genocide that continues to dominate the Sudan countryside.
Other works illustrate the recent earthquake in Afghanistan.
Paul said she has been creating awareness pieces for about a year and half now. The change, she added, was a result of a reaffirmation of faith. Now, she said, she creates her artwork to glorify God by instilling the element of world awareness in her audience.
“I hope people come out and enjoy it,” Paul said. “I hope they take some awareness with them when they leave.”
