Cal U to lift curtain on theater season

2 min read

CALIFORNIA – Barnyard animals, ballerinas and jealous intrigue announce the beginning of yet another semester of rousing performances conducted by the Cal U Department of Theatre and Dance. Set on the eve and morning of Cockle Lochinvar Day, Joseph Robinette’s “The Day the Rooster Didn’t Crow” is a delightful fantasy about King Reginald Rooster and his crowning, which causes the sun to rise, and Foxy Moxy who weasels his way into the barnyard to dispel such a myth.

With disguises, mistaken identities, budding barnyard romances and a play-within-a-play staring Henny Penny and her feathered friends, Michele A. Pagan directs the 11th annual first-year student show. See “The Day the Rooster Didn1t Crow” October 25-28 at 8 p.m. and Oct. 28 at 2 p.m. at the Learning Resource Center.

Next up is love, obsession and innocence lost in William Shakespeare’s comedy “Much Ado About Nothing,” directed by Michael J. Slavin.

Set in Ragtime Era New Orleans, this rollicking comedy features two couples – Beatrice and Benedick and Hero and Claudio – as they duel with the power of love and jealousy.

One couple vows never to fall in love, while the other couple battles against falling out of it. Surrounded by a supportive group of family and friends, this couple must also deal with a ludicrous constable and a villainous aristocrat. Often referred to as a war of the sexes, this comedic tale addresses lust, misunderstandings and the presence of evil.

“Much Ado About Nothing” will begin Nov. 8-11 at 8 p.m. at the Natali Student Center Performance Center.

Finally, there’s the annual production of “The Nutcracker” ballet. Create a very special memory with family and friends this holiday season by attending this world famous classic directed by Donna Marovic-Anthony.

Celebrating the magic of Christmas with the timeless tale of a little girl and her magical Nutcracker Doll, the ballet is produced by the Department of Theatre and Dance and The Mon-Valley Dance Council.

“The Nutcracker” will be performed at the State Theatre in Uniontown Dec. 8-9 at 8 p.m. and Dec. 9-10 at 2 p.m.

Tickets for this event may be obtained by calling the State Theatre Box Office at 724-439-1360.

For tickets for the two productions on campus, call the Cal U Box Office 724-938-5943.
