Ballet Lafayette to perform ‘Frankenstein … It’s Alive’
Ballet Lafayette, the resident Ballet Company of The State Theatre Center for the Arts, will present “Frankenstein … It’s Alive” at 8 p.m. Nov. 9-10 and 2 p.m. Nov. 11. “Frankenstein…It’s Alive” will present Mary Shelley’s story of a man, Victor Frankenstein, who is obsessed with reanimated life after death. The ballet will show the arch of Victor’s character and how his “creation” destroys life because it is confused about why it exists.
The original novel was written in 1818 and became increasingly popular in 1931 where Boris Karloff played the role of “the monster.”
There have been many spin offs from the original story including “The Bride of Frankenstein” and “Young Frankenstein.” Some elements of these two films have been included in Ballet Lafayette’s production.
“The story is based on the original Frankenstein, but I have added very interesting elements and twists that draw your emotions into feeling like you’re a part of the story,” said director of Ballet Lafayette Kelly Jenkins. “This ballet is a must see for everyone teenagers, college students, men, women and children that aren’t frightened of monsters. It is awesome.”
Another interesting element to Ballet Lafayette’s performance is the feel of the music, which has been originally composed by Emmy award-winning composer, Jace Vek.
“Jace and I decided to go a different direction with the music for this performance,” Jenkins said. “The music is still very classical but has a heavy metal feel to it so the choreography is as strong and powerful as the music.”
