Somerset Galleries will showcase nationally known artist
SOMERSET – Nationally known Pennsylvania artist George LaVanish will be featured at the Somerset Galleries, 152 W. Main St., Somerset, Jan. 12-14. The show hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. LaVanish will be displaying 20 new originals and a variety of limited-edition prints.
LaVanish has illustrated stories and covers for many national and regional magazine during the past 30 years. He has designed stamps for The National Wildlife Federation and print programs for state and national organizations. To date, he has illustrated 10 outdoor books. LaVanish painted the PA Trout Unlimited print series, which features a Presidential Edition signed by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter. In addition, he did the First Mid-Atlantic Audubon Society Print titled “Autumn Blue” and worked with Babe Winkelman of television’s “Good Fishing” on a print of a largemouth bass, “Last Cast.” He has been the National Whitetails Unlimited Artist of the Year. He painted the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission’s Coolwater/Warmwater Print Series and designed the 1999 PA Trout/Salmon Stamp & Print. His painting was featured on the PA Fish & Boat Commission’s 2003 Conservation Stamp/Print, and he is working on the ongoing series the “PA Game Fish Series.”
Currently, LaVanish is working on the PA Chapter of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation’s limited-edition print and patch series. The series is very limited, only 200 collector prints and 50 artist proofs will be produced each year. He also is the owner of Wilderness Editions, a publisher of fine art prints. Wilderness Editions produces and distributes a wide variety of wildlife art prints, which includes the new 2007 Pennsylvania Trout Stamp/Print Program, The Collector Series and the 2007 Pennsylvania Triple Trophy Stamp, Patch and Print, which will be released this month.
