Junior Reporter Club

3 min read

Interested in becoming a member of the Herald-Standard’s Junior Reporter Club? It’s very easy to join. All you have to do is sit down, write a story and send it to the Herald-Standard. It should be typed or printed very clearly.

The stories can be sent to the Herald-Standard, c/o Junior Reporter Club, 8-18 E. Church St., Uniontown, Pa. 15401.

They can also be e-mailed to mo’keefe@heraldstandard.com. Each story should contain fewer than 100 words.

Youths writing for the first time receive a letter of congratulations from Herald-Standard Executive Editor Mark O’Keefe along with a card making them official members of the club.

Youths getting a second story printed receive another letter from O’Keefe and a coupon for a treat from a local business. Youths getting more than two stories published will receive a certificate of recognition. All stories must be accompanied by a phone number for verification. Return addresses should also be included with the stories. The age range for the columns is 7-12, but stories can be submitted by anyone under 18. For more information, call O’Keefe at 724-439-7569.

The topic for January is “What’s your resolution for 2007?’ Youths can also write about other topics.

Here are this week’s stories:

New years resolution

Kennedy Crossland

Uniontown

My new years resolution is to get good grades and to get along with people. I picked this because I want to get good grades on my report card. I want to get along with people so I don’t have problems with them.

Mrs. Groover

Katie Smith

Smithfield

Did you ever have a favorite fifth-grade teacher? I had one. Her name was Mrs. Groover. She was awesome. On the outside she is her real age, but on the inside she seems 12.

Mrs. Groover teaches fifth-grade science and history. She teaches at D. Ferd Elementary School. When we played bingo, whoever won got a piece of candy. She even came to the fifth-grade banquet. She brought her two sons and almost every girl liked them. I did not. Well, gotta go! See ya!

Sisterly love

Briann Cramer

Uniontown

Once upon a time there was a little girl and her little brother. The girl’s name was Lila and her little brother’s name was little Ben. Lila and Lil’ Ben were very close. They did everything together, and I mean everything. Lila was 11 years old, and Lil’ Ben was 7 years old. There was one thing about them. They weren’t like any other brothers or sisters. They only had each other to depend on. Their mother, father and them got separated in a very bad storm. Lila hung on to her brother as hard as she could, but her hand slipped from her mother’s hand and they were separated. Lila and Lil’ Ben had nothing but each other. They lived on the side of the street and ate from garbage cans. They couldn’t afford clothes or food so that’s all they had. Lila prays every night that her brother and her will be safe out there. No one can predict the future, Lila said.

But she still prays.

My favorite sports

Ali Rafter

Smock

I have two favorite sports. One is basketball. I like it because it is fun. I’ve played for three teams. I’ve played for St. Mary in Uniontown, the YMCA in Uniontown and for St. John’s in Uniontown. I’ve played since I was in third grade.

I also like cheerleading. This is my first year cheering. It is really fun. I love doing sports because it is a way to be with friends. I learned a lot of new cheers.
