Geyer Performing Arts Center sets auditions for musical
SCOTTDALE – The Geyer Performing Arts Center of Scottdale has announced auditions for the musical “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.” Auditions for actors, singers and dancers will be conducted at two different venues. On Sunday, Feb. 11, auditions will be held at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, North Gallatin Avenue, Uniontown, from 3 to 6 p.m. On Monday, Feb. 12, auditions will be at the Geyer Performing Arts Center, 111 Pittsburgh St., Scottdale, from 6:30 until 9:30 p.m.
Adults (men and women), minimum age 16, are being sought to fill roles in this musical comedy with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart. Rehearsals will begin during March in Uniontown with performances slated at the Geyer Performing Arts Center on April 19-22.
Those wishing to audition must have a prepared vocal solo (ballad or show tune) that best demonstrates their vocal range and voice quality. Those auditioning must supply a copy of their music for the accompanist. A cappella renditions or taped accompaniments are not acceptable.
Those auditioning will be asked to do a character reading from the show script and the choreographer will assess them with movement and dance abilities.
“A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” first opened on Broadway in 1962 with Zero Mostel in the leading role of the Roman slave Pseudolus. The show enjoyed a revival in 1996 with funnyman, Nathan Lane, in the lead.
Sondheim’s score includes the Comedy Tonight,” “Love I Hear” and “Everybody Ought to Have a Maid.”
The production staff for “Forum” will include Brad Henry, music director; Ginny Tanner, choreographer; and Bill Dreucci, director.
