local Auditions for the upcoming production of “Johnny Cash: the Man in Black” are being held at the Geyer Performing Arts Center in Scottdale. The show will be performed Sept. 6-9. Vocal skills are a must. Guitar skills are preferred but not necessary. Experience in performing with a live band also is helpful. Those auditioning should come prepared to sing at least one Johnny Cash song of his/her own choice. Tapes are permissible but must be instrumental only. Flatwoods Productions will present the murder mystery comedy “Drop Dead,” which will continue its summer 2007 season at the Curfew Grange. The show will be presented on Aug. 3-5. The State Theatre Center for the Arts in Uniontown will produce an All High School Musical this summer under the direction of Toby Maykuth. The Jozart Coffee and Tea Shop will be open during intermission and before and after the performances.The Uniontown Downtown Business District Authority has announced the 2007 Storey Square Summer Concert Series. This popular downtown event will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays. Storey Square is located on Main Street next to the State Theatre Center for the Arts. The concert series continues through Aug. 27. The concerts are free to the public, and a local restaurant will be serving food and refreshments at a cost. The Connellsville Lions Square Concert Series will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Sundays at Connellsville Lions Square on Crawford Avenue in Connellsville. Sharon-Sementa Bunyan, who teaches Art 1 and Art 2 at the senior high school, will show three-dimensional paintings, jewelry and wearable art. Madelyn Cindric, who teaches Art 2, Art 3, Art 4 and Cermanics/Sculpture at the senior high school, will display watercolor paintings and limited-edition prints. Marianne Filiaggi, who teaches elementary art at D. Ferd Swaney and A.L. Wilson, will show her handmade glass jewelry and photography. The exhibition will be displayed in the bank’s Main Street showcase. Most items will be for sale, a portion of which will benefit the Uniontown Art Club. Touchstone Center for Crafts in Farmington will hold evening art auctions on Thursday evenings throughout the summer. The weekly auctions offer area residents and Touchstone students evening entertainment, as well as an opportunity to acquire unique art works at affordable prices. A readers’ fee of $5 for one play or $8 for two will be charged, but playwrights will receive a share of the performance proceeds for any play produced by CCT. The Christian W. Klay Winery will hold an hold-fashioned hog roast with bluegrass music. This event will be held at 5 p.m. July 28. The menu will feature all the trimmings of a traditional hog roast including roasted hot, fried chicken, coleslaw, tossed salad, corn on the cob, roasted red potatoes, baked beans, dinner rolls, chocolate cake with caramel sauce and iced tea or coffee. The Mount View Band will provide the entertainment. The band is made up of members Larry Garella on guitar, Nancy Brown on bass, Herb Brown on mandolin and Jim Cowan on banjo. Brown and Garella have recently written their song son called “Dancing with the Gypies” and plan to record a CD in the fall. There is a cost for each person. The American Cancer Society’s signature fund-raising event Relay for Life of Laurel Highlands will be held Aug. 11-12. Relay for Life is an event involving relay teams that take turns walking, running or strolling around a track. Entertainment, activities and prizes are available to all participants. Community members and family show their support by joining cancer survivors in the first lap – The Survivor Victory Lap. Survivors are then honors at a reception. Luminaria, in memory of honor of loved ones, are lit at dusk and remain lit throughout the night to serve as an inspiration to everyone.

Spend the night at the zoo on Aug. 8, 17 and 22 at the Woodland Zoo, 3400 National Pike Farmington. Cruisin’ in the Park V, a car, truck and bike show, will be held Aug. 19 at Shady Grove Park in Lemont Furnace. Registration will be held from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., followed by the car show from 1:30 to 4 p.m. There is a registration fee. The first 240 will receive 11-inch stand-up dash plaque and gift. The top 90 trophies will be awarded, including one 5-foot best of show, one 5-foot largest car club and one 5-foot people’s choice. Classes include modified, 1900-1931 and 1965-1969; Corvette, 1932-1950 and 1970-1985; bikes, 1951-1957 and 1986-2007; and street rods and trucks, 1958-1964. The event will include a 50/50 drawing and food. A Chinese auction will be held. A live broadcast from Pickle radio will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. D.J. Terry’s Tunes will provide music. All vehicles are welcome. Golf carts will be on site, and camping is available. Visitors can arrive at the show by train via Fayette Central Railroad. The 24th annual Italian Heritage Festival will be held Aug. 18-19 in Uniontown. Fayette Central Railroad will run its second season of tourist train rides between Uniontown and Dunbar. The train leaves downtown Uniontown from the Laurel Business Institute parking lot off Gallatin Avenue. The first train leaves at 11 a.m. and returns at 1:30 p.m. The second train leaves at 2 p.m. and returns at 4:30 p.m. There is a 30-minute layover in Dunbar. Passengers also can board in Dunbar at 12:30 p.m. and return at 3 p.m., with a 30-minute layover in Uniontown. No reservations are necessary. Tickets can be bought in Uniontown or at the tick booth in Dunbar. Riders also can take the train to Shady Grove for swimming and take a later train back. A cookbook with a forward by award-winning chef Joe Carei of Caileigh’s Restaurant in Uniontown is available at the State Theatre Center for the Arts in Uniontown. The cookbook is full of recipes and historic photographs of “The Grand Old Lady of Main Street.” They are available in the theater box office from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and at all performances. The Friends of the Uniontown Public Library are selling New Geneva Stoneware as a fund-raiser. The three styles offered, each inscribed “Fayette County,” are a mini jug, a mini crock and a pencil jar and are available in the Pennsylvania Room on the second floor of the library. The Friends also are selling hoagie tickets, which can be purchased at the first floor circulation desk. All funds raised directly will benefit the Uniontown Public Library.

The “Carpathian Cookery” cookbook, now in its 12th printing, having sold more than 10,000 copies, is again available for sale. The 330-page cookbook now has a new look and features a protective plastic cover and includes sections on Christmas customs and recipes, Easter customs and recipes, traditional Rusyn foods, other ethnic dishes and many other recipes of St. John’s parishioners. Demon House in Monongahela will be open every weekend during July. Ghost hunters recently visited the house and their investigation was filmed on location for Comcast on-demand television. This activity is causing Demon House to open its halls of horror every weekend in July. Outside the haunted mansion, many outdoor activities are offered for entertainment. Demon House’s outdoor movie theater plays continuous showings of classic horror films under the stars. Music, bonfires, roasted hot dogs, marshmallows and summer food are featured. During guided tours of Demon House, participants will meet the high-spirited cook, explore the limits of insanity with a mad scientist, encounter horrifying ghosts from the beyond and more.
