Grand Theater to present ‘Nunsense’

2 min read

ELIZABETH – The Grand Theater, located at 207 Second Ave., Elizabeth (next to Rockwell’s Red Lion Restaurant) will present that funny, habit forming musical “Nunsense” written by Dan Goggin for three performances Friday through Sunday, March 23-25. “Nunsense” is the winner of four Outer Critics Circle Awards, including Best Off-Broadway Musical in its original New York Production.

This international hit opened in New York on December 3, 1985. The musical had a long run of more than 4,000 performances.

“Nunsense” tells the story about a show that is a fund-raiser for the Little Sisters of Hoboken to raise money to bury sisters accidentally poisoned by the convent cook, Sister Julia (Child of God.)

Updated with new jokes, additional lyrics, two new arrangements and a brand new song, this zany musical has been wowing audiences for years. Everyone remembers the five nuns: Mother Superior; Sister Hubert, Mistress of the Novices; Sister Amnesia, who has lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head; Sister Robert Ann, the streetwise nun from Brooklyn; and Sister Leo, the novice ballerina.

The score pulses with merriment and an unabashed desire to make the audience laugh, with songs and spontaneous comic interludes paced at a breakneck speed.

Musical numbers include: “Growing Up Catholic,” “A Difficult Transition,” “Nunsense,” “One Last Hope,” “So You Want to Be a Nun,” “Turn Up the Spotlight,” “Tackle That Temptation With a Time Step,” “Holier Than Thou,” “We’ve Got to Clean Out the Freezer” and “Drive-in.”

An audience participation quiz starts off the festivities and later in the show audience members can buy a cook book of favorite Catholic recipes to help the nuns reach their fund-raising goals.
