Businesses to host Discover Uniontown event from May 17-19
Twenty downtown businesses are collaborating to host Discover Uniontown’s Past, Present & Future Weekend that will be held Thursday through Saturday, May 17-19. The highlight of the three-day event is a Scavenger Hunt with the grand-prize winner receiving a gift certificate package, including a $500 Discover Uniontown Gift Certificate.
“We have united to host this event to invite the local community to truly Discover Uniontown,” said Jessica Hajek, director of development at the Commercial Center Associates.
“We are inviting the community to participate in this fun event and see first-hand the number and quality of shops and restaurants located in our downtown,” Hajek said.
Each participating merchant (limited to restaurants and shops within a two-block radius of Main Street) in the Scavenger Hunt submitted a two-line riddle to help participants identify their business.
Participants are encouraged to register from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 17, at Heritage Park at the corner of West Main & Pittsburgh streets. The rain location is under the marquee at the State Theatre Center for the Arts.
When participants register, they will receive a guide that lists the 20 participating businesses, the addresses and the first clue.
Additionally, the newly revised Discover Uniontown Guides to the Theatre, Shopping & Dining will be distributed that include a downtown map and street guide.
As each participant solves the riddle and visits the appropriate business, that merchant will provide the next clue and initial or verify that business on the participant guide.
After the evening of May 17, participants for the Scavenger Hunt can register at any of the participating businesses.
All completed participation forms for the Scavenger Hunt are due at the 30 East Main Restaurant by noon on Saturday, May 19.
At that time, the grand-prize drawing will be awarded that includes the $500 Discover Uniontown Gift Certificate along with various certificates from downtown businesses. Other prizes will also be awarded in the categories of The First Person to Finish, The Youngest to Participate and The Oldest to Participate.
There are several other events planned as part of Discover Uniontown’s Past Present & Future Weekend. On Thursday, May 17, from 5 to 7 p.m., The Dutch Treat will perform while strolling down Main & Morgantown streets. The barbershop quartet is donating its time in support of the event. Quartet members include Don Miller, tenor; Gerry Provance, base; Sid Guest, baritone; and Frank Rush, lead.
Friday, May 18, will be highlighted by another volunteer performance from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. by the Kendall Brothers (Jason & Jeremy Kendall). There will also be a lunchtime vendor so that spectators can enjoy their lunch in the park.
On Saturday, May 19, the Fayette Progress Council, the Community Foundation of Fayette County and the Green Gardeners are hosting Downtown Uniontown’s Spring Planting Day beginning at 9 a.m. in Storey Square.
Volunteers are asked to meet there for a planting assignment along Main & Morgantown streets.
In addition to these festivities, the Downtown Business District Authority is hosting a car cruise on Saturday that will take place along West Main Street from noon until 4 p.m. as part of the National Road Festival.
The wagon train is due to travel and stop along West Main Street at 2:15 p.m. in front of the Fayette Chamber of Commerce where residents and local dignitaries will unite.
The Commercial Center Associates (CCA) is serving as the lead entity for the Discover Uniontown Past, Present & Future Weekend. CCA was founded in 2004 by Joseph A. Hardy III to serve as a catalyst in the revitalization efforts in the city of Uniontown.
Since that time, CCA has acquired various properties in the downtown and regularly coordinates promotional efforts with downtown merchants and organizations.
