local Actors and Artists of Fayette County will present “Girls of the Garden Club,” a two-act comedy by John Patrick, at the Geyer Performing Arts Center in Scottdale on May 31 and June 1-3. Auditions will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday in the Geyer auditorium. These auditions, which consist of reading a short scene from the script, are open to the public. There are roles for 17 women, including a 16-year-old girl, and two men, one non-speaking adult and one 15-year-old boy. Stage experience is helpful but not necessary. All roles are open. Evening rehearsals will begin on Monday, April 23. A rehearsal schedule will be announced at that time. Ron Bronson will direct the show.

The Glenn Miller Orchestra will play at 7 p.m. May 19 at the State Theatre Center for the Arts in Uniontown. The event is sponsored in part by National City Bank. Back at the theater by popular demand, the legendary Glenn Miller was one of the most successful of all the dance bandleaders back in the swing era of the 1930s and ’40s. Under the direction of Larry O’Brien, the 19-member band continues to play many of the original arrangements that have been delighting Miller fans for decades. The Beesontown Singers of Uniontown will present its second spring concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 20, in the sanctuary of Asbury United Methodist Church. The group is comprised of 18 auditioned singers from the tri-county area, whose common goal is to preserve the choral arts for future generations. It is most appropriate that the singers perform during the National Road Festival because the group derives its name and historic inspiration from Uniontown’s earliest founding by Henry Beeson, when the town the aptly named “Beesontown.” Beesontown’s strategic location on the Old National Road contributed to its early growth and prospertiy.

West Overton Museums, located between Scottdale and Mount Pleasant on Route 819, announces the beginning of its 2007 Quilt Competition, now in its 24th year, a southwestern Pennsylvania exhibition, which will be on display in the Distillery Building from Saturday, June 2, through Sunday, July 15. More than 50 quilts in eight different categories from the tri-state area will be on display among the museums’ historical exhibits. The show is free with paid museum admission. Corvettes and Jaguars at Linden Hall, the 14th annual participant judged show, will be held June 3 on the grounds of Linden Hall Resort in Dawson. The eighth annual Hopwood Village Parade celebrating the National Road Festival will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 19. The parade will begin at the National City Bank and proceed on Route 40 to the Bennington Road intersection. The parade is one of a number of activities taking place in the village. The ceremony crowning the village royalty will be held at 11 a.m. on the National City Bank lawn area. The wagon train will stop for lunch in the grassy area at the Hopwood Fitness Center. Food, entertainment, sidewalk sales and the annual Hopwood Garden Club Plant Sale will highlight the day’s events along with many flea markets. A fishing derby for children age 12 and under will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. at the South Union Township Recreation Area at Hutchinson. Prizes will be awarded, and refreshments will be served. Participants must bring their own fishing gear. An old-time doubleheader baseball game will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at the ball field at the South Union Township Recreational Park at Hutchinson. The Asbury United Methodist Women will hold its annual Feminine Fellowship Dinner at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the church social hall. The speaker will the Rev. Fayette Central Railroad will start to run its regular weekend schedule in May and continue through December. The first train will leave Uniontown at 11 a.m. on its way to Dunbar and will return at 1:30 p.m. The second train from Uniontown leaves at 2 p.m. and returns at 4:30 p.m. Both trains will have a 30-minute layover in Uniontown. This train boards at the park in downtown Dunbar. Special runs will be held throughout the year. Some of them include the cab and caboose run this Memorial Day out of Dunbar. Girl Scout Day Camp will be held June 19-21 at Shady Grove Campground. All girls entering grades one through six are welcome to attend. The Friends of the Uniontown Public Library are selling New Geneva Stoneware as a fund-raiser. West Virginia Public Theatre announces its audition schedule for the upcoming Morgantown auditions for its 2007 summer season. Non-equity and equity auditions will be held from 1 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Falbo Theatre in the WVU Creative Arts Center. Production rehearsal and performance dates for the productions of “Sweet Charity,” “The Odd Couple,” “Funny Girl,” “Aida,” “A Chorus Line” and “The Full Monty” are June 8 through Aug. 5. Rehearsals will be held at the Creative Arts Center, and all performances are held at the Lyell B. Clay Concert Theatre in the WVU Creative Arts Center.
