The Glenn Miller Orchestra will play at 7 p.m. Saturday at the State Theatre Center for the Arts in Uniontown. The event is sponsored in part by National City Bank. Back at the theater by popular demand, the legendary Glenn Miller was one of the most successful of all the dance bandleaders back in the swing era of the 1930s and ’40s. Under the direction of Larry O’Brien, the 19-member band continues to play many of the original arrangements that have been delighting Miller fans for decades. Country music will be performed on Saturday at the Sagebrush Round-Up on Bunner Ridge near Fairmont, six miles east of Interstate 79 at Exit 139. The open stage will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. with The Round-Up Bond. The regular show starts at 7 p.m. with Bill Reny, Highway 79 Bluegrass, Your Request Band, Bernice & Little Country and The Round-Up Band. There is an admission charge for adults. The Beesontown Singers of Uniontown will present its second spring concert at 4 p.m. Sunday in the sanctuary of Asbury United Methodist Church. The group is comprised of 18 auditioned singers from the tri-county area, whose common goal is to preserve the choral arts for future generations. It is most appropriate that the singers perform during the National Road Festival because the group derives its name and historic inspiration from Uniontown’s earliest founding by Henry Beeson, when the town the aptly named “Beesontown.” Beesontown’s strategic location on the Old National Road contributed to its early growth and prospertiy. Accompanist for the Beesontown Singers is Joanna Ball of Connellsville. Kevin Milliken will assist her. The concert is free and open to the public. Asbury United Methodist Church is located at the corner of Dunbar Street and South Beeson Avenue in Uniontown. The church is handicapped-accessible.The Frank L. Melega Art Museum will present 2007 “Artists of the Pike” at 6:30 p.m. today during the Brownsville Area Revitalization Corporation’s annual dinner at the Thompson House Restaurant, 815 Water St., Brownsville. All Saints Regional School, 100 S. Washington St., Masontown, will hold a chicken and biscuit dinner in the school from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Take-out orders are available.
The eighth annual Hopwood Village Parade celebrating the National Road Festival will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday. The parade will begin at the National City Bank and proceed on Route 40 to the Bennington Road intersection. The parade is one of a number of activities taking place in the village. The ceremony crowning the village royalty will be held at 11 a.m. on the National City Bank lawn area. The wagon train will stop for lunch in the grassy area at the Hopwood Fitness Center. Food, entertainment, sidewalk sales and the annual Hopwood Garden Club Plant Sale will highlight the day’s events along with many flea markets. A fishing derby for children age 12 and under will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. at the South Union Township Recreation Area at Hutchinson. Prizes will be awarded, and refreshments will be served. Participants must bring their own fishing gear. An old-time doubleheader baseball game will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at the ball field at the South Union Township Recreational Park at Hutchinson. Refreshments will be available.
The Brownsville Apostolic Gospel Church will hold its semi-annual charity bazaar today and Saturday at the Uniontown Mall. Featured items will be homemade specialty baked goods, including nut rolls, various cookies, fudge, assorted breads and pies along with various flea market items during the two-day event.
Larry Lohr’s second memorial golf outing benefiting the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation will be held today at the Pleasant Valley Country Club. Sponsorship opportunities will be available at various price ranges. Registration/continental breakfast will be held from 7:45 to 8:45 a.m. followed by a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Complimentary beverages will be served on the golf course. A steak dinner will follow. Prizes will be given away. Any donations of golf balls, golf bag items, gift certificates and other prizes are welcome. Big Brothers Big Sisters in partnership with The Westmoreland Cultural Trust and WDVE 102.5 FM will present Pittsburgh rock ban The Clarks at 7 p.m. Sunday at The Palace Theatre in Greensburg. The doors open at 6 p.m. All proceeds support Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Laurel Region’s programs helping children reach their fullest potential through mentoring relationships.
