local Auditions for the upcoming production of “Johnny Cash: the Man in Black” are being held at the Geyer Performing Arts Center in Scottdale. The show will be performed Sept. 6-9. Vocal skills are a must. Guitar skills are preferred but not necessary. Experience in performing with a live band also is helpful. Those auditioning should come prepared to sing at least one Johnny Cash song of his/her own choice. Tapes are permissible but must be instrumental only. Actors and Artists of Fayette County will present “Oklahoma” July 12-15 at the Geyer Performing Arts Center, 111 Pittsburgh St., Scottdale. Flatwoods Productions announced that ongoing auditions for men and women of all ages are still needed for the following shows: “Gypsy,” “Radio Gals,” “Drop Dead,” “42nd Street” and “Bridge to Terabithia.” Also needed are children of all ages for most of these shows in various roles. The 17th annual Saxophone & Woodwind Workshop hosted by the Three Rivers Saxophone Quartet will be held June 25-29 at Gallagher Music Hall at California University of Pennsylvania. There is a cost for tuition and room and board on campus. All saxophone enthusiasts from middle school age through adult, including students, amateurs, teachers and professionals, are invited to attend. This year’s special guest artist is Jerry Bergonzi, professor of saxophone and jazz studies at the New England Conservatory of Music. In addition to his teaching, he is in demand as a jazz artist, clinician and adjudicator. He will coach a small ensemble, give an afternoon master class and a recital at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 27. The Uniontown Downtown Business District Authority has announced the 2007 Storey Square Summer Concert Series. This popular downtown event will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays. Storey Square is located on Main Street next to the State Theatre Center for the Arts. The concert series begins on June 4 and continues through Aug. 27. The concerts are free to the public, and a local restaurant will be serving food and refreshments at a cost. Patrick Daugherty, area artist and educator, will teach two six-week art courses, Painting In Oils and Acrylics and Drawing from Life Course, at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus. Painting In Oils and Acrylics will continue through June 1. The Drawing from Life Course will continue until June 2. Both courses have three-hour sessions from noon to 3 p.m. Courses are open to beginners and experienced artists. Painting beginners will receive a step-by-step program of painting exercises to develop basic skills and to understand color. The plays will be read and judged by members of the 64 Crayons Writing Workshop. Final decision on production rests with the CCT Board of Directors. Manuscripts will be accepted from now through Tuesday. No more than two plays will be considered per playwright. A readers’ fee of $5 for one play or $8 for two will be charged, but playwrights will receive a share of the performance proceeds for any play produced by CCT. The fee will be waived if the author joins the Writers’ Workshop and participates in the production process. Cruisin’ in the Park V, a car, truck and bike show, will be held Sunday, Aug. 19, at Shady Grove Park in Lemont Furnace. Registration will be held from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., followed by the car show from 1:30 to 4 p.m. There is a registration fee. The first 240 will receive 11-inch stand up dash plaque and gift. The top 90 trophies will be awarded, including one five-foot best of show, one five-foot largest car club and one five-foot people’s choice. Classes include modified, 1900-1931 and 1965-1969; Corvette, 1932-1950 and 1970-1985; bikes, 1951-1957 and 1986-2007; and street rods and trucks, 1958-1964. The event will include a 50/50 drawing and food. A Chinese auction will be held. A live broadcast from Pickle radio will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. D.J. Terry’s Tunes will provide music. All vehicles are welcome. Golf carts will be on site, and camping is available. Visitors can arrive at the show by train via Fayette Central Railroad. The annual quilt show at Walnut Hill United Methodist Church, 132 Collier Road, Uniontown, will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 7. Exhibits will include needlework, in addition to quilts. Quilting will be demonstrated. A bake sale, craft sale and flea market will take place. Lunch, including homemade pies, will be available in the picnic pavilion. Quilts and other needlework will be judged in numerous categories, and ribbons will be awarded. The Uniontown Senior Citizens’ Monthly Dance for Memorial Day titled “Moments to Remember – A Salute to Our Veterans” will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. Monday at Uniontown VFW Post 47 on West Main Street, Uniontown. The Big Bedtime Story and Concert will be held from 8 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 1, at Nemacolin Castle in Brownsville. Kweilin Nassar will lead the group through an enchanted evening with special guest reader Jo Lieb from the Herald-Standard and Cinderella right out of her own story. Pittsburgh CLO Mini Stars will entertain the audience with songs and dances from Broadway. Milk and cookies from Westmoreland Community College will complete the evening. The 24th annual Italian Heritage Festival will be held Aug. 11-12. The California Rotary Club will present the Kelly Miller Circus for two performances at 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, at Roadman Park, located at California University of Pennsylvania. This year’s show will feature elephants, horses and a cast of international circus stars under a circus big top. West Overton Museums, located between Scottdale and Mount Pleasant on Route 819, announces the beginning of its 2007 Quilt Competition, now in its 24th year, a southwestern Pennsylvania exhibition, which will be on display in the Distillery Building from Saturday, June 2, through Sunday, July 15. More than 50 quilts in eight different categories from the tri-state area will be on display among the museums’ historical exhibits. The show is free with paid museum admission. Corvettes and Jaguars at Linden Hall, the 14th annual participant judged show, will be held June 3 on the grounds of Linden Hall Resort in Dawson. Show registration will be held between 10 a.m. and noon. A registration fee will be collected at the gate for all show cars. Dash plaques will be awarded to the first 100 cars registered. Awards will be presented to 40 “best of the decade” winners. “A Salute to All Corvette and Jaguar Hardtop Models” will be the show theme. Fayette Central Railroad will continue its regular schedule through December. The first train will leave Uniontown at 11 a.m. on its way to Dunbar and will return at 1:30 p.m. The second train from Uniontown leaves at 2 p.m. and returns at 4:30 p.m. Both trains will have a 30-minute layover in Uniontown. This train boards at the park in downtown Dunbar. Special runs will be held throughout the year. Some of them include the cab and caboose run this Memorial Day out of Dunbar. The “Swimmer’s Special” to Shady Grove that runs between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Fall foliage and haunted trains in October.
Girl Scout Day Camp will be held June 19-21 at Shady Grove Campground. All girls entering grades one through six are welcome to attend. Those participating or volunteering at the camp do not have to be Girl Scouts. Adults can volunteer for one day or all three days. The Friends of the Uniontown Public Library are selling New Geneva Stoneware as a fund-raiser. The three styles offered, each inscribed “Fayette County,” are a mini jug, a mini crock and a pencil jar and are available in the Pennsylvania Room on the second floor of the library. The Friends also are selling hoagie tickets, which can be purchased at the first floor circulation desk. All funds raised directly will benefit the Uniontown Public Library.
The “Carpathian Cookery” cookbook, now in its 12th printing, having sold more than 10,000, is again available for sale. The 330-page cookbook now has a new look and features a protective plastic cover and includes sections on Christmas customs and recipes, Easter customs and recipes, traditional Rusyn foods, other ethnic dishes and many other recipes of St. John’s parishioners. West Virginia Public Theatre announces its audition schedule for the upcoming Morgantown auditions for its 2007 summer season. Production rehearsal and performance dates for the productions of “Sweet Charity,” “The Odd Couple,” “Funny Girl,” “Aida,” “A Chorus Line” and “The Full Monty” are June 8 through Aug. 5. Rehearsals will be held at the Creative Arts Center, and all performances are held at the Lyell B. Clay Concert Theatre in the WVU Creative Arts Center. To audition, individuals are expected to come prepared to sing 32 bars of an up-beat tempo and ballad. And, if auditioning for “The Odd Couple,” prepar a one-minute comic monologue. Also, bring the proper clothes and shoes for a possible dance callback.
